Long term zinc usage

I've been taking 50 mg of zinc (vitamin shoppe brand which is a mix of 3 types) for about 6 months. The reason why I'm taking it is I have the white flecks on my fingertips and brittle nails. Also my libido was low. I recently upped it to 100 mg a day. My libido increases and I wake up easier. However no improvements in the nails yet. Is there a limit to how much zinc you can take and for how long? I want to know if I'm getting close to toxicity?

My nails grow faster than normal since I'm also taking silica for my hair. The ridiging and flecks are also at the base of few nails.

How do you test for HCL acid levels? I didn't know zinc had anything to do with stomach acid.

How did you take the betaine? Equal doses all the time, or did you supplement until it burned?

I was taking 100 mg of zinc a day for half a year and then did a zinc tally test, it tasted like water. After researching, it was obvious that I had low stomach acid. Coincidentally I was also suffering from a uncomfortable stomach after eating. I did a betaine hcl test, and failed it, after 6 weeks of betaine my stomach acid was good, and my zinc tally test had improved.

oh, and you can side step needing sufficient stomach acid to absorb zinc by taking the best albion chelated zinc, which doesnt need stomach acid to ionize it.

The nails will take a long time to heal. The new healthy nail grows out from the base, so you wont see nail improvement for many months.

google betaine hcl test, or check out poliquin's website, he has an article on there about the betaine hcl test.

you need enough stomach acid to absorb zinc or your body cant use it, a zinc supplement that has the albion gold seal of approval will side step the need for needing stomach acid to absorb it. And if you are supplementing with minerals it ought to have that seal or dont waste your money on less than awesome supplements.

Long-term zinc needs to be supplemented with chelated copper at a ratio of 15:1 Zn:Cu.
