Any other raw food converts out there?

Hello! I'm new here, i have been eating paleo for 3 weeks now... The adjustment is slow. I was vegan for 15 yrs, gourmet raw for 6 of them, and then fruitarian the last 4 yrs. for most of it, i have to tell you, i looked and felt awesome! But then the past year or so, things started catching up with me.... No energy, extreme laziness, lassitude, mood swings, sever bloating, acne, eating fruit all the time without being able to stop myself, always feeling hungry, depression, never wanting to settle down (travel addiction) - and people started telling me to eat meat... I ignored it at first, i thought fruitarian was the bomb.... Eventually i could ignore it no longer though, and i slowly started switching, adding in eggs and fish. It was so hard to change! Like many other fruitarians and raw foodies, i thought i had the "way", like i was on the camino trail to Truth or something:) Now i eat free range beef, chicken, coconut butter, and mostly cooked instead of all raw veggies..... I am slowly adjusting. Things are shifting. I am not as flighty, spacey, and i don't need afternoon naps anymore... I can walk for miles. And am back to daily yoga, which i had completely let go of.... I am happier, more focused, feel grounded, and don't have the need to always be "running". Spiritually, i feel more connected to people, nature and animals.... Which is so amazing, i mean, my connection to animals is what prompted me to be vegan to start with:) I now understand all life forms are "living", not just animals.. Makings conscious choices, and being loving, and strong and healthy - are the best ways i can make a difference..... In the short time i am here. Practicing ahimsa and non-violence starts with myself first and foremost. And i was killing myself, methodically and painfully. My acne has gotten worse to start, not better, but i believe it is a transition. I haven't lost any weight yet, but the bloating is much less severe, and i believe the 10 pounds i had gained over the past year of dis-ease will come off as my body adjusts to assimilating fats again..... Thank you for reading!

Thank you for your note. I wish i could go back as well.... My last years as a fruitarian, basically 30BAD as well, were what really did me in i think. My gall bladder probably hasn't produced any bile for 5 years or so at least. The more fat i cut out of my diet, the worse i felt, and the more i was told to eat even less fat and only carbs...... It will take time for us to heal, but i believe it will happen for us.....

(Answer is probably that she's responding to the post by NewPaleon. If you notice, he/she says "That's my story, not too different from yours". That's why she says "our experiences sure are similar". Being new to PaleoHacks, she probably thought it was like other forums where you respond in-line with the thread, rather than as comments under the post. Understandable, as most forums are not like PaleoHacks. As for why the username is different though... no idea, perhaps she lost her password lol)

Denise Minger at rawfoodsos.com is more famous for her China Study debunkings...but there is good information there for both raw and ex-raw foodies transitioning to a diet including animal products. Don't worry about weight: it's usually the last thing to move, after health has returned. Acne could be many things, but suspect cheese or milk if you started eating those. Best of luck, JS

Thanks for joining and great to hear about your positive transition! I never tried the raw thing for too long and there is sooo much contradictory information out there. What I typically do now when cooking veggies is 1/2 raw and 1/2 cooked, best of both worlds!

oh yeah. right here!!!

worst decision I have probably ever made in my life. I will be paying for it forever. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 6 months after starting the 80/10/10 diet. I had been a raw vegan before that, but not high fruit/veggie fiber.

I feel better on paleo, but still have not found remission for my UC. I really wish I could go back and time and change what I did, but at the time, the 30BAD leaders acted like I would be a superhero on this diet and that my bloody diarrhea was just "detoxing" years of SAD- which I never ate anyway. had been a vegetarian for a while.

Hello! Yes, our experiences are sure similar.... I agree with the age thing, i am 42. I have also wondered about vegetarian/low fat/raw foodists gall bladders or livers becoming dysfunctional due to lack of use on the diet... The acne is so embarrassing though, and many times i don't want to go out of the house, but just get myself to swallow my pride, and go out anyway..... The really crazy thing is that my friends tell me they don't even notice it.... I think when we are happy and healthy, our beauty shines through, no matter how much we think it isn't:) Every time i have a higher fat meal, my acne seems to be worse the next morning, and i also experience fatigue after eating, so something isn't quite right, but if it is maybe hormonal or an organ deficiency, it might take our bodies some time to come to a homeostasis again..., Thanks for sharing! I don't want acne to stop me from staying on this new diet, as i do believe in many ways i am getting stronger, but sometimes it feels like if i am so healthy, the acne should have cleared up.... Keep me posted how you do!

I did the raw vegan thing on and off for a few years but I was mostly 80% vegetarian, with lots of whole grains and leafy greens. Like you, i felt and looked great for the first few years then I started having all sorts of problems, digestive, skin, joint, etc. Then I found out that I was severely allergic to gluten so I cut that out and felt better. Then I found Paleo and cut out all grains and my rashes cleared up and digestive issues such as bloating and gas cleared up. I lost 3 inches around my waist. My joints are fine now after aching randomly for the past 5-6 years. My only issue right now is acne, which I never had before in my life (I'm in my late 40's). The acne has gotten better since I started using azeleic acid gel but I'm confused why I would have acne when my body seems to be doing so much better?

I suspect that whole grain vegetarianism led to the gluten allergy but have no way to know for sure, of course. And maybe age has something to do with it. Almost all of my peers have noticed drastic changes in their bodies from ages 40-50. Doctors almost never take my acne issue very seriously because I'm really healthy for my age, comparatively speaking, and acne is a cosmetic issue. But it bothers me.

Thats my story, not too different from yours.
