Is it safe to eat active yeast?

Like brewer's yeast or baker's yeast... I know there are yeast extracts and nutritional yeast and stuff but can we just eat the whole, living yeast without risking a systemic yeast infection of some sort?

Used to do a lot of home brewing and when you got to the end of the bottle and drank the dregs, you found out later that if you weren't acclimated to it you would spend the next day in the bathroom. So the yeast didn't kill you it just made for some uncomfortable times. By the time I was used to it I was way overweight.
