Tobacco, beer, sweets, and other vices...

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created March 31, 2011 at 8:29 AM

So I love eating paleo; all of the health benefits, the lack of calorie counting, and the overall happier lifestyle. However, there are certain moments when I feel the desire to enjoy a fine cigar, a quality beer, and maybe indulge on something sweeter. What is everyone's (if any) favorite "cheat?" This question is for fun and general curiosity; I don't want it to turn into a "you ought to not" thread.

I eat a lot of white rice - with Kerrygold originally, and now in the form of sushi (I'm in Japan now, yay!). I've gotten over any guilty feelings for it, because my body seems to digest it really easily and I find my recovery is good.

Same attitude here when I do cheat - I'm young, this is the time when I will be most able to get away with it. Granted, no binge drinking or cigarettes here. But over-eating or going for dessert is something I can deprive myself of when I'm 50+. For now, I'll stay active and convince myself parts of me are still growing.

"It's go big or go home"- seriously. The number of posts like "I cheated with half a cup of milk and a teaspoon of hot chocolate powder, what willz I do with my life!" I scoff at. Cheating for me is fudge-like gluten free brownies with ganache, a proper ice cream sundae, or a tortilla taco feast. It has to be good to be worth it!

Ummmmmmmmm. Sapporo and Kirin are both made with malted barley as well as rice. I think it's almost impossible to make beer with just rice. (I live in Japan and my colleague just wrote a book about alcohol over here- "Drinking Japan"...). Some beers are low malt, they're known as 'happoshu,' but both Kirin and Sapporo have gluten in them.

I still eat plain white rice, at least three times a week - I don't consider it a cheat. It is perhaps nutrionally 'void' but is relatively harmless, and does taste yummy drenched in butter!

I'm with you. I went strict paleo last fall with two full carboys bubbling happily away in my closet. My pre-paleo consumption would have burned through that by now, but I find I can't drink beer with as much vigour since (*sniff*). Still love a big gravity home brew on a Friday after work...

i drink wine. never been much of a beer drinker. i have wine a few nights a week, and if i have more than one glass, i always end up having a cigarette, too. for food, i make a killer dark chocolate-chipotle gluten free cake with cinnamon whipped cream. im talking twice a year for that one, but worth it every time.

I still drink liquor on a fairly regular basis. I enjoy it and have no plans to cut it.

Sugar, in the form of chocolate torte, has been my latest vice. My husband and I just finished the one I made last week and I'm already trying to find an excuse to make another...mmmm...

Beer. I'm drinking one right now.

I'm a mad keen homebrewer so it's not just the drinking that I enjoy, it's the brewing of the beer in the first place.

If only I could figure out a way to ferment fat and protein!!!

There are a few questions related to "cheats" on Paleo hacks. Go to "tags" type in "cheats" and look at the questions and answers.

It's always alcohol for me, but extremely rarely. I love the history and craftsmanship that comes along with every form of alcohol, so learning about them, doing tastings, and discovering all of the variations is as much "play" as it is drinking.

Since I travel a lot, I have a lot of opportunities to cheat. I love to connect to a culture and be snobbishly educated this way - I'm trying artisan sakes in Japan, I recently traveled Belgium and tried tons of beer and genever there, wine in France, baijiu and maotai (EWW.) in China, gin in England. I hate whiskey unfortunately so I can't tack that to my list in any country, but I'd love to be a whiskey-sipping bad-ass.

A nice Cameroon wrapped stogie while fishing with a flask of Scotch, and a Sapporo or Kirin (both rice beers) with sushi suits me just fine.

If I'm going to cheat - it's go big or go home time for me. CUPCAKES! From a special cupcake store where I live - mmmmm vanilla cake filled with a coconut lavender cream. Topped with a lemony cream cheese style frosting (but in the 6 months that I have been paleo -I've only had one).

We had pizza about a month ago - and I was up all night vomiting and shaking. Don't know if that was all physical or partially mental though - definitely will not be eating pizza again though!

Plain white rice. Growing up Asian, we had it with every meal. It has been the hardest thing for me to give up, and it has become a "comfort food" when the urge to emotionally eat comes on.

I still drink hard liquor and smoke cigarettes when I go out on the weekends with my friends. I might suck down 10-12 drinks and a pack of luckys on a Saturday, but honestly I'm young, it's an essential part of my social life, I enjoy it, and if I'm 98% paleo the rest of the week I don't think it's so bad. Plus, being well nourished, I'm the only one of my friends that doesn't have a hangover the following day :)

I grew up eating a lot of dairy, so when I cheat it is usally ice cream or a really good cheese. But, then I do pay for my cheat, I have found out by going paleo that I have quite a few food allergies, and dairy is one of them, so needless to say I don't cheat often.

Pizza. Usually if we have a pizza night I'll have my husband pick up a gluten free one from a Hyvee on his way home from work. Veggie though, so there aren't nitrate meats on it. Sometimes I'll make my own, but I like having the night off. Also like a good wine from some in state small wineries. Mike's Hard Lemonade Light is nice on a hot evening or on rare occasion a Red Bridge Beer.
