Jerusalem artichokes- good or bad?

My older sister just gave me some Jerusalem artichokes to grow in my garden. Is this a good Paleo food choice or not? Seems like since they can tend to grow wild and multiply, it is possible they were a native food source in the past. And I think I read that they have inulin and that has some benefits. What do you think?

I wish I would knew about the need to repopulate during the antibiotics course sooner ;)

Thanks Dexter- found this comment online-- Because this starch, or inulin, is not easily digestible by everyone, it may be best to introduce the vegetable in small amounts. John Goodyer, one of England's pioneer planters of the early 1600's wrote, "But in my judgement, which way soever they be drest and eaten they stir up and cause a filthie loathesome stinking winde with the bodie, thereby causing the belly to bee much pained and tormented, and are a meat more fit for swine, than men."

The inulin is good for the gut as it ferments in the gut and restores gut health.

Dr Ayers at http://coolinginflammation.blogspot.com/ thinks that most diseases of civilization originate because of unhealthy gut flora.

Other natural products that contain inulin and Oligofructose which is similiar are burdock root, chickory root, Jicama, Pectin, Onion, Leaks, Arichokes.

Oligofructose is similar to inulin, a fiber that occurs naturally in a wide variety of plants. Good sources are jerusalem artichokes, jicama, artichokes, onions, leeks, burdock and chicory root. Certain non-industrial cultures had a high intake of inulin. There are some caveats to inulin, however: inulin and oligofructose can cause gas, and can also exacerbate gastroesophageal reflux disorder . So don't eat a big plate of jerusalem artichokes before that important date!

Not that I'm dating after 37 years of marriage, but I can attest to loud bursts of flatulance after consuming burdock root and Jerusalem Artichokes.

Jerusalem artichokes = vegetables = good :)

However as Dexter said quatitiy is important. Quantity applies to other foods too, you probably wouldn't want to eat a half a pound of prunes in one go either...

I love them. And having recently come off a 7 day course of antibiotics (due to a deep cut suffered in the kitchen) I have been eating them along with taking probiotics to help repopulate my decimated gut.

I should have first read this article about the Jerusalem artichokes here in Paleo Hacks... Because yesterday I ate them for the frist time - and spent a horrible night. It was only 200 g with my meat but my abdomen feels as if it has been transformed into a fermentation tank.
