Already Slipped?!

Hey All,

Well....I WAS on day 2 of my 30 day Paleo Diet and decided to go for a smoothie and went to Smoothie King (I don't usually go to Smoothie King but I thought it would be ok.) I asked the girl if it was just frozen fruit with no sugar added and she said yes, except for the orange juice.... I asked her about Mangosteen and she said it was extract...NO ADDED SUGAR.

I tried it and after a few sips I figured it was too sweet to NOT have sugar added. Then come to find out that Smoothie King has added syrup....now I have to start over.....If I can hold out until 12:30MST on July 4th.....I'll be ok. Hopefully I'll be able to have a cheat on July 4th if I don't have anymore slips.

Any of you have this happen? Is a smoothie out of mangosteen, mango, strawberry, kiwi and papya a slip due to syrup/sweetner?

So did I have a slip or not? The smoothie had mango, papya, kiwi, and mangosteen in it. I figured the mangosteen has sweetner and one or more of the other fruit had syrup in it.....

Here's an easy - but important - tip: chew your food, don't drink it.

It's not like finishing a Whole30 perfectly means anything. You don't get special superpowers for doing so. You also don't cure cancer, you don't get a bikini body. At the end of a Whole30, all you've done is eat an extremely restricted diet for 30 days.

I think also it has to be said that a smoothy made with orange or apple juice goes against the spirit, if not the letter, of a 30 day restricted diet. It's a huge amount of sugar. Really really. Go ahead, eat some berries, eat an orange. But a smoothie with an orange juice base is probably the sugar of four oranges without the fiber, even if technically they don't add any sugar. If you need to have a smoothie once per week, fine. If you have one every day or two, well, you're kind of cheating even if technically it's not. There is no universally agreed upon definition of paleo, but even those who allow fruit juice allow only a very little, and a smoothie does not fit the definition of very little.

The great thing is that once you've become used to not having the massive sugar hit, berries etc will become so sweet tasting that you won't miss, or even want, a smoothie, and you get the same enjoyment with much less sugar.

Smoothies in general (either made at home our purchased) are definitely not recommended on Whole30. Search their site, you won't find a single endorsed smoothie recipe.

That's because the reset plan is about some fruit. Take the slip up in stride and keep moving. There are worse slips you could have made.

If I make smoothies, they are at least 2+ cups frozen kale, coconut water, and only half a cup or less of frozen fruit. If the fruit looks like more than you could reasonably eat as a snack, it's probably more than you should drink.

The advice to chew your food rather than drink is top notch. Drinking nutrients isn't the same process and chewing and swallowing.

Hi there...

I had a similar episode quite early into my paleo reset....Personally i just started again! I found that by doing that i was able to do my 30 days without that feeling of guilt in the back of my mind! But don't be so hard on yourself!!

Hope this may help in some way?!

Constantly, dont be too hard on yourself. A little extra sugar here and there wont sabotage you. I find its best to just avoid resturants all together. When I can't I grab a salad, or stick to a steak.

It is also possible that you were looking for sugar in the product, mangosteen is very sweet.

Smoothies are not "strict-paleo" due to the fact you're drinking your calories and consuming a lot of sugar in one go. If you are REALLY want a smoothie, I would suggest making one at home using coconut milk or avocado as a fat source with a banana and some spinach. Make sure to be getting fats and proteins and such along with all that sugar!

Whatever results you want to see from a Whole30, stress will not help you. Keep Calm and Paleo On, Miss.
