Why am I Hypothyroid YET I can't gain weight?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I have all the symptoms of Hypothyroidism:

  • low Free T3 values
  • low end range of normal Free T4
  • normal TSH
  • libido is gone
  • hair is going
  • somewhat weak nails
  • fatigued like hell (especially in the morning - cortisol?)
  • can't sleep past 3AM
  • anxiety
  • depression

YET I can't gain weight?

I'm a 6'1'' 150 lbs squirrel.

Maybe because I have a decreased appetite, but I do eat lots of animal fats, olive oil and coconut oil. I'm doing 3 squares a day. I've heard IF can help with hypothiroidism, but I think it was IF that put me Hypo in the first place.

I posted this at the bottom as well as I didn't realise. I am the same. I am Hypothyroid and I really struggle to keep weight on. I am 125 lb and 5'7" I need to gain at least another 25 lb no matter what I eat I can't keep it on. I don't restrict myself on food. I have been living in Asia for the past 5 years and was diagnosed 4 years ago

Err....I think the selenium may be your problem. Don't quote me, but I recall that selenium without iodine inhibits thyroid function. Check out the Perfect Health Diet blog--they're the experts.

Carbs in the form of what? You should probably up that to like 400 or more considering your height and weight and lower your fat intake. Looks like you might need selenium too.

Travis, yes, I'm having at LEAST 200mcg of Selenium, 1g of Vitamin C (camu camu, acerola, rose hips etc), Zinc 50mg and I'm reluctanct on the iodine... I have a kelp/iodine supplemnt, but there is a lot of contradiction on the web. I'll start taking it soon again.

I'm from the Mediterranean, I get plenty of sun during the day. I also take digestive enzymes and probiotics everyday. I'm not sure what else to do.

Have you tried supplementing with iodine and selenium and increasing carbohydrate intake?

Eat some damn carbs and stop fasting.

I have to say that IF has got to be the single most common thing that gets people into trobule when the diet is low in carbs.

I really don't think one should IF frequently without proper glucose intake and carb refeeds. Especially if young and exercising.

Make sure you're absorbing all the nutrients you're eating. If you have any gut irritation or other GI problems, that's going to work against you. Also, try taking some digestive support in the form of digestive enzymes and probiotics, if you aren't already.

Do not IF.

I think you need to see a health practitioner to help dial you in. Perhaps a respected naturopath steeped in the evolutionary/Paleo-perspective.

Make sure you're Vitamin D replete and try getting some sun on your skin, too.
