No weight loss. What am I doing wrong?

Answered on August 19, 2014
Created August 02, 2012 at 2:32 AM

Hi, I exercise 6-8 hours a week (walking, Pilates, trainer, recumbent bike, weight machines). I have egg and dairy sensitivities so I totally avoid them. I do not eat wheat or corn and I don't drink soda. I have lost 3 pounds in six weeks. A typical day is a half can of coconut milk and frozen fruit smoothie, raw veg, meat and three to four fruits, ~12 almonds, lots of water and cooked green beans. I would love to know what is going wrong. ANY TIPS?

Yes 76 grams at least but that's not the weight of the foo but the content of protein ie a steak has about 22 gms protein

Eat beef, chicken with the skin on, pork chops with the fat on, liver. With the meat have some vegetables and sweet potatoes and add a little butter or olive oil to them. But don't expect magic. What you'll get is satiety and vitamins which will help you be less miserably hungry while you practice portion control. Portion control is hard with fruit smoothies and nuts and other snack-like foods.

Veggies and protein!!! If you are actually hungry, you might not be eating enough protein. It really helps. Go to the site I gave (or another) and see if you have symptoms of hypo-thyroid. Does your daughter have the autoimmune form of hypothyroid? Its important to know (the site Stop the Thyroid Madness explains it well).

No problem, 1 serving of fruit a day will be fine if you are trying to lose weight. But when you start to have more, it's a ton of sugar that you are adding in. I used to be addicted to fruit to the point of nearly being fruitarian. Even when I started eating paleo I relied on fruit (a bag of grapes a day) and gained a lot of weight during that time period even though the rest of my food was pretty little/nothing spectacular. I cut my fruit servings back to 1 a day and lost the weight I had gained plus some. This is strictly for weight loss btw. You can maintain with more servings.

Let's see, you state that "1 serving of fruit a day will slow weight loss" and I am bold to say that a person who exercises several hours a week and doesn't overeat should be able to lose weight even if they eat 6-7 servings of fruit. Yes I am bold. Bold, logical and observant. Thank you! Do you have any actual evidence for stating that one serving of fruit will slow weight loss?

I have no experience with random thyroid excuses and I see no value in presuming this person or anybody else's "go to" excuse. This person is exercising and what she listed, while not specific, does not appear to be too much food. Anybody who has experienced real thyroid problems would not be so flip or judgmental.

Also I wouldn't just go advising someone to skip meals without knowing more, or if they want to fast or not. Skipping a meal can be very unhealthy for some (mentally and/or physically)

Too many people these days come up with a random thyroid excuse. It reminds me of people who just pop pills constantly for all their health needs. The poster told you their diet and you think it's their thyroid? They have 3-4 fruit servings a day PLUS a frozen fruit smoothie. They're probably having 6-7 servings of fruit a day. 1 serving of fruit a day will show weightloss. And you think it's a thyroid problem because that's the 'go to' excuse for anybody.

You should not be exercising for more than an hour a week(if all your doing is looking to lose weight)doing resistance training. Ideally you would like to do 20mins sessions three times a week with at least one day off between each session. I would also cut out the coconut milk here is an interesting article on it http://chriskresser.com/3-reasons-why-coconut-milk-may-not-be-your-friend and I would also try to cut out the green beens.

Well. How tall are you, what do you weigh, and what is your bodyfat percentage, if you know it (or can estimate it roughly)?

Forgive me, but I see a lot of these types of posts coming from people with healthy body-fat percentages and plenty of lean mass (people who often have goals of looking ultra-lean like natural body builders, or just like someone with a smaller frame size/body type). Metabolically healthy people will not see much weight change from eating to satiety on 'paleo'.

Probably the fruits, try to keep your fructose from fruit to 15 grams a day. 4 fruits and a frozen fruit smoothie a day might be stalling your weight loss. The lowest sugar fruits are berries, and they alone can have 8 grams of sugar per cup (such as strawberries). I know it sucks, but just cut try to cut back to 15 grams for a little while and see if it makes a difference

Also, in addition to the above nutritional advice, it is important to remember that we cannot always go by the number on the scale. Especially if you are exercising, a change in body composition might be better reflected by how your clothes fit. Take measurements every few weeks to check (belly, waist, thighs, etc.).

If you are doing weight training you really need a lot of protein to keep the muscle from breaking down - Muscles are your friend when trying to lose weight - treat them to lots of protein - at least 1 gm per Kg of your weight! I agree too much sugar - !

Sometimes its not as simple as diet - doing lots of exercise on the wrong diet can cause lots of other problems - inc adrenal fatigue. Good sleep is also so important - rest your body

Maybe its time to go see someone who agrees with a paleo lifestyle - most naturopats do

The food isn't magic. If you are already fairly lean, just eating paleo food doesn't cause you to lose weight. If anything I'd say you eat too little, do too much low-grade cardio and not enough strength training or exercise that truly works you hard. Your food choices are too diety and not nutrient-dense enough and not enough fat/too much fruit and sweet mushy adult baby food type stuff.

What you'll get is satiety and vitamins which will help you be less miserably hungry while you practice portion control. Portion control is hard with fruit smoothies and nuts and other snack-like foods.

I agree with everyone else, if you're already at a healthy weight you're not going to see pounds just melt off you like butter. Your diet sounds fine to me, maybe add some more protein and healthy fats, but I would suspect that your expecations are just too high. 3 pounds in 6 weeks is pretty respectable if you're already at a healthy body fat percentage.

The key to smoothies is AFTER you work out. Also, as stated above, more stats needed, and you may be doing too much. How is your stress/sleep?

Stress is probably ok. Sleep is an issue. I have difficulty getting to sleep and staying asleep. I do not take any sleep medication.

Get your thyroid checked!

Do you have other symptoms of low thyroid besides inability to lose weight?
This may help you. http://stopthethyroidmadness.com/long-and-pathetic/

My bad. I read that wrong. I think I am still confused... you are saying that one serving fruit a day is OK but more is not? Please clarify. Thanks

I have no experience with random thyroid excuses and I see no value in presuming this person or anybody else's "go to" excuse. This person is exercising and what she listed, while not specific, does not appear to be too much food. Anybody who has experienced real thyroid problems would not be so flip or judgmental.

I don't eat that much fruit personally but it alone is not going to make a person unable to lose weight.

Well my daughter was just diagnosed with a thyroid problem. I don't know if it is something I need to have tested but I will share this with the dr. the next time I visit. Fruit is my go to food. Is there anything I can munch on that would be better for me?

Let's see, you state that "1 serving of fruit a day will slow weight loss" and I am bold to say that a person who exercises several hours a week and doesn't overeat should be able to lose weight even if they eat 6-7 servings of fruit. Yes I am bold. Bold, logical and observant. Thank you! Do you have any actual evidence for stating that one serving of fruit will slow weight loss?

How much do you weigh? Height? I see so many people on here saying they're frustrated about their lack of fat loss, but they are at a healthy weight already.

I'm not saying that it applies to everyone but it certainly is an established theme. Sometimes your body is just in a happy place regardless of what you wish it to be. But, before anyone can truly hack what the issue might be, a bit more info is needed.

When you eat healthy, your body WILL adjust accordingly but remember, depending on how long it has taken to get there, it could take you just as long (probably not) to undo the damage that's been done.
