Gain weight help

Answered on September 12, 2014

I have been pretty much paleo for awhile now with some Greek yogurt occasionally. How the heck can I gain some weight? I'm 131, athletic male, 31 yrs old 5 ft 10. I can't eat nut butters because I have an allergy to mold and they seems to give me sinus infections. I have sibo and some yeast overgrowth which is much better. What added calories of food can I get other then oils? Thanks

I love potatoes but it increases the yeast too much. Sweet potatoes are better but I m staying away until my gut gets better. Thanks for the advice though. But I need something else. I wonder if their is a nut butter that doesnt have mold?

Lol you think he'll destroy his gains (presumably muscle gains right?) by eating potatoes on top of what he's already eating? What alternate bizarro world are you living in? If anything he would add fat/muscle depending on macros and activity level, but lose gains? Come now.

Yea dude, I feel for you, but you'll have to figure something out one way or another, those carbs are what's going to help you put on that weight, there's no real way around that that I'm aware of.

Potatoes and rice feed the bacteria and yeast. However, I feel bloated no matter what. I had the worst diet for many years consisting of nothing but sugar, carbs and a ton of protein. Now I'm paying for it. Plus years of antibiotics and diet caused me this. Now I eat bone broth, meat, veggies, some yogurt, that's about it. I cut out grains last month like gluten free oats.

You can try several things:

  • Eat some fruit (For health reasons, you should go completely nuts, at least not long term, at least get some good amount of fruit in your diet)
  • Enjoy dark chocolate (if you like it)
  • You can make smoothies with heavy cream, fruit, maybe cinnamon, cocoa powder and/or vanilla for flavor. Its easier to over consume calories when they are liquid.
  • You can drink bulletproof coffee (coffee with butter and coconut or MCT oil) or do something equivalent with tea.
  • Try eating different things and see how much calories you can eat as a normal meal. You might find that meals with a combination of carbs and fat go pretty easy, whereas high-protein meals are satiating very quickly, which means you can't consume very much. So I would avoid things like chicken-breast and eat more things like sweet potatoes with liberal amounts butter and a little salt (carbs+fat+salt = pretty good combination for over consumption)
  • Don't do cardio for too long (like endurance running).

If I wanted to gain weight I'd focus on adding extra fats and carbs to every meal. Normally eat steak and veggies for dinner? Add butter to the veggies, cook the steak in coconut oil, have some dark chocolate or a mousse for dessert.

Also, making your own mayo/aioli is a great way to add calories.

Pity we cannot swap between men and women on these issues. You have a lot of women who eat much less and well and still keep putting on weight and a lot of men who no matter what they seem to do cannot put on weight. I seem to be able to p ut on weight whatever I eat even 100% meat/protein or a varied paleo diet etc etc. Nothing keeps it off.

Do you avoid dairy just because it's "Paleo"? Or do you have lactose intolerance? If so, how strong is it? I personally can't tolerate straight milk (though I haven't tried raw milk), but fermented dairy (yogurt and kefir) and fat-based dairy (cream cheese, heavy cream, etc) I can do. These are great options for adding calories to your diet if you're trying to bulk.

Also, dunno if you've already tried them, but I find I tolerate yams (sweet potatoes) much better than regular white potatoes. Might be worth a shot, as they're also a great source of carbs.

Write down exactly what you eat in one day and I but you aren't that paleo....or the increase in protein and red meat is causing muscle increase.

And don't eat potatoes and rice. This is Lady Paleo garbage to make the diet "easier". If you want to destroy your gains eat rice and potatoes. Those two foods are useless and not paleo.
