Calories are not that important, but how much is too much?

Hello! I've been on paleo for a month now. I feel amazing, train almost every day hard ( interval fasted cardio, some weights and aerobics)and look a lit leaner. The last month I ate a lot: just to make sure I stay paleo, mostly nuts, fatty meat, eggs and olive oil, but sometimes a lot if fruit also : about 2000-3000 cal a day and I was still losing weight! I am a woman, 5'7 and 145 pounds, want to be 125. My problem is that i just stopped to lose weight and am getting just muscular, whats not my goal. I tried to eat 1200 calories a day, but that was a nightmare-can't do it! I am now confused if I must count caliries and how much i should eat. I know it' stupid, but I am really confused: I ate a lot more than I was burning and lost lbs. Now where's the logic... how can I lose more?? What works for you??

Thank you very much!!!

thanks, britt. so from all of that i understand that i must focuse on the cals... 1200 or anything under 1600 is a mission impossible for me (btw i gained the weight for the first year in college, was 125 my whole life, now i am 20). i didnt stop training in this year, so a lot of the weight looks good on me, but i feel different, like not me at all. ok, ok. its time for action! i'll stop eating like a paleo pig and will focus on results! wish me strenght!

thank you very much matt, that gave me some clarity! so... what do you think of 1800-2000 cal a day and 2 intermittent fasting days till dinner with about 1000 calories at dinner. 4 training days, 2 of them weights and cardio, 2 others fasted cardio intervals and steady state cardio, than whole body workout on a trx trainer. ?:)))

people, i just do not like the women that have a lot of muscle, for example crossfit girls. Some are sexy, but the majority is not my type. I like Ciara in the "gimmie that" video for example. I can now see my 2 abs and if i eat very miserable for a week i can see the 4 abs and my legs and buns are very muscular, but i do not want more. just wanna shed that fat. thanks for the answers anyway.

Grab your scale and throw it in the trash. Your stress levels over this number are hurting you. Don't look at a scale for thirty days, get good, quality sleep, and keep building muscle. Muscles are metabolically expensive tissue, the extra fat loss will come, keep at it.

I was 145 a couple years ago, after a couple years of college eating. On SAD, I dropped 20 pounds by doing the whole 1100ish calories a day diet. It was miserable and I was constantly dizzy. Once I got to 125lbs I focused on maintaining but my weight slowly crept to 133 in the next year and a half. Since going paleo a few months ago, I have dropped back to 125 without a calorie deficit. I'm like you in that I can't create a decent deficit now without feeling miserably hungry. If you're stuck though, I would think that cutting calories even a bit might get thigs back on track.

Bah, another arbitrary number! ;) You have fat to lose, weight may or may not change. You're not so far out of range, that the scale is the end-all benchmark. What you look like is. 200+ pounds, folks need to worry about the scale. Within 20 pounds of "normal", the focus should probably shift to body composition.

I guess you slowed your metabolism. you must eat a minimum of 2000 calories a day, it's a discipline, not a luck! :) will help

Okay, I like muscle too but I really have fat on my abs! A minimum of 10 pounds is a must. I have pure fat there, when I sit i can grab a belly :D but thank u for the encouragement!

I wish I was that lucky. If I eat over 1100 calories, I don't lose weight (I need to be 110 lbs, and I'm 142 lbs). After the initial 25 lbs lost in the first 4 months of the diet, I stopped losing completely. I'm now still on Paleo, 15 months later, and haven't lost a single lb since February. Only when I restarted low calorie 2 weeks ago I started losing weight again.

oh, thanks! thats a release! 1200 calories makes me inable to study, train and make sex :( like a normal person :D i did 1200 because i wanted a bigger deficit if there is such a thing anyway... so ok, i will eat like 1600-1800 calories a day, maybe try IF also. Did u lose weight after starting paleo or were you always 125? :) sorry for the lot of questions ;/

I take issue with your title question. Calories are important!

Simply shifting to paleo affects things like elctrolytes, glycogen stores, etc... that's going to cause a shift in weight. For example, I recently added back a significant amount of rice to my diet and my weight shifted immediately 2 pounds up. I didn't gain 2 pounds of fat overnight, but rather I likely topped off glycogen stores. That's probably why you lost weight this past month eating even a maintenance level (2000-ish calories). That shift takes a couple weeks, and explains why you stopped seeing changes after a month.

There's a lot of wiggle room between 2000-3000 calories per day and 1200. Why the extreme shift? Shifting to 1500-2500 calories per day should induce about 1 pound per week loss. And at your weight, that's about all you'd want to do.

"Want to be 125" and body capable of actually being 125 may be two different things. If you cannot function on 1200, up it until you are able to function and are satiated. If you actually have fat to lose, try cutting out some or all of the fruit. Some people stall or gain weight on fruit. Muscle weighs more than fat, so the scale may not be your best measuring tool. Use a tape measure instead.

I'm the same way... As long as I'm paleo or even paleo + rice, I lose weight. Some days I'm so hungry that I eat 2500-3000 calories. I'm 5'8, 125ish and still lose when I'm not cheating. Maybe cut your calories a bit if you're in a rut... Not down to 1200 but maybe 1500+ what you burn. Either that or change up your workouts a bit. That might help you get back on track then you can go back to not counting.
