Weight loss & autoimmune disease (Graves disease)

I have currently switched over to paleo (3 weeks in) I'm very overweight due to my autoimmune disease, Graves' disease. I'm 255 5'6 and 30% body fat, according to my measurements & being tested at the gym. I can't workout much because my thyroid levels don't seem to want to stabilize and I'm exhausted 24/7. Not only did I start paleo to lose weight but to also curb the symptoms of my autoimmune disease. When I started 3 weeks ago, I wasn't 100%, but I am now & I've lost 8 lbs, seen my inflammation drastically reduce & my joints don't ache. I know sleep is important , but I can't really do much about the insomnia that the disease brings.

How can I lose weight & improve my situation with paleo. I already see results, but I guess I thought at my size I would lose a lot more, faster? I lost 6 lbs my first week, now I'm not really losing anything...any suggestions?

Something else you might consider too, is biphasic sleep. There was just a thread on here that I also posted on about that. Personally, I sleep about 6 hours, stay up 5 hours then take a 2-3 hour nap during the day. This also helps keep my cortisol levels low and I'm not as groggy/tired, nor do I have the aches and pains I used to. http://paleohacks.com/questions/172658/any-biphasic-sleepers-here-what-do-you-do-in-between-sleeps

I need to adjust my schedule. I know f my thyroid is semi off its hard to sleep. But I just spent a brief stint in the hospital for the stomach flu...couldn't recover. I think that has really messed me up.

between 7-8, i eat breakfast, avocado & bacon or some kind of meat, occasionally eggs or a protein packed smoothie. (Coconut milk, spinach, avocado & maybe honey. lunch is where i eat mostly meat & some veggies. Snack, maybe I make these coconut flour pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. 100% paleo...I may eat them for snacks. I eat about 3-4 meals a day. I rarely eat nuts & am cutting back on my fruit...I don't have much since I'm trying to loose weight! Most of the time I'm told I'm not eating enough. I've seen an improvement, but I'm hungry at night sometimes too.

Wonderful news for your improvements! I'd encourage you to visit perfecthealthediet.com and read his articles on thyroid function and also visit chriskresser.com for his info on thyroid. While iodine supplementation can trigger graves flares, this appears to be the case only in when selenium is deficient. Repleting micronutrients will be super important for you. The PHD site will have a lot of info. Best wishes for your continued improvement!

I know you say you can't do much about the insomnia, but what have you tried so far? I used to sleep like crap because of my thyroid issues (and still occasionally have bad nights). I use a combination of l-theanine (200mg) and melatonin (15-20mg time release dose). It has helped me out a lot. Some people combine those with valerian or tryptophan too if that duo doesn't quite work. Paleo has helped me a lot as well because of the issues I had with grains, but I think the most important part was eliminating dairy. Sleep is such an important part of the process. I notice my weight really fluctuates when I don't sleep enough because it seems to affect my adrenals and thus my cortisol levels. Adding the supplements to help me sleep has been very beneficial, although you may need to tweak the dose for yourself. Some people have to take as much as 400mg of the l-theanine.

Check out the book, Practical Paleo. She has a 30 day menu, recipies and more just for immune issues. I have heard several podcasts were the hots have followed her plan and have seen amazing results. I am currently following her plan for PCOS, since that is what I am dealing with and find it easy and yummy which is always important.

I am truly interested in this , I am hypothyroid , I was performing CrossFit and loved it but was always exhausted. I have not worked out in weeks and have lots of energy but I really want to work out again.

What does your typical day look like? Could be too many nuts or fruit? The paleo mom has great recipes but also writes about autoimmune disorders - mostly her own.
