Rapid Weight Loss - detox symptoms?

I have a person I'm training and have put on a paleo-ish diet. He's about 5'9" and has gone from 220lbs to 200lbs in about 6 weeks. Amazing progress, especially as he still drinks wine and eats some desserts. I've kept it as simple as ditching the bread/pasta/gluten/refined sugars for now.

Everything has been great except he got bronchitis and thought he had pneumonia after that. Turned out not to be pneumonia however the fact remains that he has been fairly sick the past couple weeks. I've told him to start doing some bone broths.

I don't think its overtraining, though that may have played a role. He doesn't drink all that much so I don't think that's it.

Is it possible that shedding weight rapidly has released a whole bunch of stored toxins into his body?

If so, are there any foods that can neutralize toxins?

And has anyone else experienced illness during adaptation to paleo eating?

thanks

I've had similar symptoms, including itchy ears. But i just thought it was allergies.

My client started a 30 day challenge and she has been very complient. No cheats at all so far. I have noticed symptoms like you described in my own transition to Paleo. I really am noticing if I have anything outside Paleo I suffer from sinus issues, itchy skin and other fun things. From my clients point of view, she has been tired, lethargic and grumpy. All great symptons of changing her diet dramatically. Started at 277 pounds and in the first 14 days dropped nearly 16 pounds. Great result but I too have been worried that she has been feeling 'sick' for the same amount of time. I have played around with some fruit to see if this helps but I am thinking the amount of toxins stored in fat, being released is the true cause. Especially when you take into account your clients bad eating habits and for how long they have been slowly poisoning their system. Keep up your good work. You will save your clients life!

I could be wrong, but I remember reading that adipose tissue can be high in omega 6s from a person's diet when they put on the fat. So by burning that fat, the omega 6s are released, thereby increasing inflammation. I suppose an omega 3 supplement would help if this is the case. Again, I could be wrong, but it seems to make sense.

There are lots of fat-soluble toxins (often pesticides) that can easily be trapped in the adipose tissue and come rushing out when you lose weight. I don't think there's much you can do to "neutralize" them, as anything you do will probably make it harder for the body to filter them out. Probably just have to wait until the body cleans it up on it's own.

I am not sure how effective they will be for your client but taking activated charcoal helps detox the body. Another regular thing is dry skin brushing. That helps stimulate the lymphatic system.

I started paleo about 3 weeks ago, I'm down from 305 to 285. I haven't had an ill effects. The only negative thing I've experienced is the lethargy a week ago, but from what I understand, that is fairly common.

I have experienced bouts of bronchitis after re-introducing sugar with a relatively clean paleo diet otherwise. The higher the sugar, the longer the symptoms last. Not sure if that's any help. I've found that if I clean it up I don't seem to get sick.

I'm on week 6 and have lost a lot of weight. Started getting leg cramps at night so I take psyllium and bentonite concoction before sleeping. No more cramps. I'm also experiencing a detox cold for about 9 days. Lots of phlegm production. I'm helping my body's detox with chlorella, cilantro, omega-3, lots of water so hopefully will get over this detox cold soon.

charcoal and chlorella with some psyllium capsules is what I am doing now. the nausea started yesterday...glad I looked it up and found some other folks with similar issues. I'll ride it out, I've lost 5 pounds in about 5 days.
