Gaining muscle without losing weight

Answered on August 19, 2014

Hello everybody. I want to learn something from experienced people. I am paleo since 3 months it goes pretty well. I want to be exempt from compulsory military service.

Thus I have to keep and increase my body weight. I don't want to give up paleo diet. How can I gain muscle without losing weight?

Body structure,fat/muscle ratio is not important. The only important factor is number on the weighing machine.

You think you have solved everything when you say realities of life very foolish

Ambimorph, not sure what your background is, but you are pretty ignorant of the realities facing most armies, as well as what type of people are required in armies at officer level (ie. doctors). People like the OP are doing everything to dodge drafts, and catching and drafting those is necessary, otherwise many countries with mandatory services would have much weaker armies. So yes, they look at BMI, but most docs will have discretion. If it's written in law like the OP claims - doubt it - there might not be discretion. Can't wait until the Entitlement Generation grows up and faces reality.

Yeah it would suck to have healthy, muscular soldiers.

Militaries usually look at BMI and have cut-offs. They don't have the doctor make a judgment based on body composition. They don't tend to have roles that require judgment, when a simple rule can be used. So I would tend to believe the poster.

How would gaining muscle help you be exempted?

Assuming you are not significantly overweight already, you are NOT going to be able to gain enough muscle weight to make you significantly overweight within a few years on a paleo diet - or ANY diet. And there's no military doctor on earth who will give you exempt papers just because you have "too much" muscle mass. All exemptions in all the armies I know of need to be validated by a visit to a doc who will take a quick look at your newly-developed Olympian physique and put you in special forces. And no, I won't give any advice how to dodge a draft, unless you can prove you're Russian.

Start by telling us your current weight, height, age and body fat percentage. I assume you're male.

Follow the Leangains plan as espoused by Martin Berkhan: 16 hour fasts, trained fasted, lift heavy weights. Eat low fat high carb on training days, low carb medium fat on rest days (with overall lower calories). Check out www.rippedbody.jp.

mate when i was gaining weight i just used to do those weight gain shakes, do the gym 5 days a week and eat like a horse. if you have access to anabolic steroids or GH this is the fastest way to put on weight, probably not the safest. Train a lot eat a lot and rest. Concentrate on compound excersises: Bench, squat, chins, dips etc

Why not gain muscle and fat at the same time? If you go for rapid muscle gain its hard to also avoid fat gain as you need to maintain higher levels of nourishment. But thats ok, once you are cleared and safe, go back on a more strict paleo that preserves lean mass but lets you begin losing the fat. Voila, awesome body!
