Fruit - how much to lose weight?

When I started, I had a few servings of fruit a day, until I read that I should cut back on it for A] The sugar content and B] To assist in losing weight [which I guess ties into A]. I have cut it out greatly - to either 1 serving or none a day [strictly "berries."] Do you really think this assists the weight loss, and how "bad" would indulging in an all-fruit "smoothie" affect the progress? [And on a separate note, would you agree berries would be the better of the fruits?]

Berries (except blueberries, I tink they are higher ) are lower in fructose. Also lemons and limes are also low. Fructose primarily effects _where_ the fat from sugars is stored, because its hard on the liver to process, all the fat ends up around your organs (your midriff) - depending on your energy output, other food intake and liver health.

Where is the fat you are losing? Fructose is hard on the liver. It adds fat just the same as any sugar does, but it does so around the belly, because its hard for the liver to process, it all ends up as visceral fat. And yes, berries are the "best" fruit because they are lower in fructose (along with lemons, limes, also low in fructose). Blueberries I think are reasonable high though? I personally stick to cranberries, blackberries, raspberries, boysenberries.

I would avoid drinking calories at all cost. I'd skip cream in coffee before I skipped a bowl of berries.

N=1 The inclusion of yam, berries, oranges and apples in significant quantities has not slowed my weight loss, it has increased it. YMMV and keep in mind I'm obese not just chubby. Fat is easy to over eat, fruit is almost impossible to over eat (for me). If anything when I re-introduced carbs I under ate because they were so filling and bulky compared to cream/cheese/coconut oil etc....

Some will groan and think, "Here comes Nance's speech again." So be it.

First, I'm not sure how much you're trying to lose. Your body probably has its own agenda, so whether it's "the last 10" or 30+ to go there's no one right way.

Here are a number of things that have helped me keep fat loss going:

  • Vary what, when and how much you eat. A settled routine tends to result in stable body fat in my experience.
  • The variation in "what" means rotating your meats--emphasize ruminants one week and maybe fish the next. In my case, I never emphasize poultry. With vegetables, leafy greens help you feel full and also provide crunch. Rotating non-starchy and starchy ones helps to avoid boredom and avoid excess density. I also rotate fruits--grapefruit, bananas and berries are frequent but I also have melons, pineapples and grapes occasionally. With the sweeter ones I reduce serving size.
  • The variation in "when" means eat meals that are large and dense enough that you won't be hungry for 4 hours or more; don't eat again until you are really hungry (signals come from your gut, not just your brain) even if it's the next day.
  • The variation in "how much" means compared to your TYPICAL intake, have occasional days when you eat significantly less and other days when you eat significantly more. For me, that seems to help my metabolism stay flexible and coaxes my body to release stored fat.

Don't underestimate the importance of getting enough restful sleep and managing your stress. No matter what you do/don't eat you won't lose fat if you are sleep deprived and/or stressed.

Specifically about fruit, I always have it unless I am fasting that day and not eating anything else either. I pretty much eat a grapefruit and a banana every day that I'm eating and I add a small amount of sweeter fruit about 1/3 of the time.

Seconding the "avoid drinking calories" recommendation.

There have been weeks where I've had a piece of fruit, or some berries every day (AFAIK berries are lower in sugar than other fruits), and continued to lose weight. I think sugar is a little bit of a different story when it comes from real foods. As much as I love mangoes... whenever I treat myself to one, one is enough for me. I can't really say the same for neolithic sugary treats!

After getting a bit nutty on VLC, I'm experimenting with keeping it simple and focusing on real food. Not banning sugary/starchy foods as long as they're whole but not making them total staples either. I'm losing weight in the 50-100g range (as rough estimates, without counting too much and varying it day to day). But if you're really stalling, maybe you want to experiment with cutting down fruit carbs--everyone is different after all! Keep in mind though that often, there can be a "whoosh" effect-- it looks like nothing's moving, then all of a sudden it all goes away within a matter of days. It's pretty much -the- pattern I've seen in my own weight loss.

If you're not actually stalling though, don't fix what isn't broken! Different things work for different people.

You can get all the nutrition you need from meat and veggies. Can't remember the last time I had a piece of sugar...er...fruit.

Half a blender full of fruit, half cup of heavy whipping cream and some protein powder is the only way that I seem to be able to complete heavy lifting days and see any significant muscle gains. This is the only time I consume fruit and I have still lost body fat while maintaining muscle mass on the paleo diet. Not sure if this helped, it's just how I treat fruit.
