Constant Ketosis to Lose Weight?

Answered on August 19, 2014

I'm a pretty much a total newbie to much of this, so please tell me if I'm doing it wrong. In addition to wanting to be the healthiest I can be, I definitely need to lose weight... We're talking roughly 80 to 100 lbs. I'm working on being more active though light hiking and yoga, but I was wondering if the fastest way to drop those pounds would be to basically stay in ketosis until I'm done/start to plateau. It's been about two or three weeks since I threw myself into the Paleo lifestyle without cheating (January was full of them, but I did technically start on New Years Day.) I haven't used the keto-stix, but I'm never hungry and I constantly have this metallic taste in my mouth so I'm going to guess I am currently in that state already. So, should I just stay where I am or is there more to it?

absence of hunger is a good indication that you are burning fat and using ketones/fatty acids for fuel. Your body needs to be triggered into that state by a high fat/low carb diet. it takes time. Hunger is caused by drop in blood sugar after consuming carbohydrates. when you are adapted to primarily using ketones if your carb level is very low you should never actually feel the old kind of "hunger". It is a completely different feeling of when to eat. Once adapted you will also feel an increase in energy.

sounds good.. you can stay in ketosis..burning fat for fuel the rest of your life. some of that will be body fat and some dietary fat depending on your intake and how much protein /carbs you take.I encourage you to do more research . Much of the basic and metabolic information comes from the well established low carb hi fat community and research. google ketones/ketosis/low carb/wheat belly/insulin response/ and read read read.. as your body/needs change you adapt your pattern. read read read

I think you mean that if they are alive they will be using some ketones. Ketosis is defined as a higher than normal level of ketones in the blood. Normal on a SAD diet, that is. A somewhat higher level than what is currently defined as normal (on a very high carb diet) is probably more natural.

You could get a blood test I guess - but why bother. There is nothing magic about ketosis with regards to weight loss. Ketoneuria is a nice way to piss some calories down the loo, but it seems that any "metabolic advantage" is very small. High levels of ketones do seem to be useful for brain function, especially for conditions where the brain isn't working well like epilepsy, ADHD, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc.

If they're alive then they'll be using ketosis, that's fairly reliable. If you're interested in the specific degree of ketosis for some reason then you're better off monitoring your goals.

Just to be clear - ketosis doesn't cause weight (fat) loss all by itself. The point is that most people tend to not be hungry while in ketosis. Therefore, total calories are reduced. Is it the ketosis or the fat and protein (which are known to be satiating)? Some folks do really well on low to very low carb. There are some who feel better with a few more carbs (and lose fat better too). If (or when) you stall, you may want to play around with carb levels to see what effect they have on you. Yes, we are all very different - like snowflakes. If you are losing and feel good then keep going.

Of the fruits the berries and citrus are best. To stay in ketosis though it is not a whole lot of fruit...

Oh! Super awesome, then. I was always under the impression that I had to stay away from fruit if I wanted to lose weight with this. You've been really helpful! Thank you!

a lot of drugstores keep them behind the pharmacy counter with the diabetic supplies, so ask if you have trouble finding them.

Berries and citrus are good fruits to include. You will have to not eat a lot of them if you want to stay in ketosis... Just the fact that you are eating one meal a day will help with ketosis. I would also recomend reading the Perfect Health Diet. Not a ketosis book but it will teach about staying nourished

I agree on the Ketostix but I have a really hard time finding them in drugstores and I live in NYC! Usually I have to buy online like drugstore.com or amazon, just as a forewarning in case you can't find them available. Good luck!

Awesome! Thank you, and I definitely am getting fat in... My meal (because I manage to have only one and am set till the next day) mostly consists of some sort of meat (usually steak) veggies (cauliflower, green beans, carrots, etc.) and either a few strawberries or an orange. That's what it's supposed to be... right? I mean, if you take out the fruit. Hah, like I said... Very new to this.

You are there it sounds like and can stay there. Usually it is less than 50 grams of carbs/day but varies for each person. I would recomend some type of weight lifting if possible. Also use crono-meter or fitday to make sure you are getting vitamins and minerals. ALso make sure you eat some fat.

The thing about ketostix is that they only test whether ketones are spilling into your urine. It's not really a good test to see if you are in ketosis (high levels of ketones in the blood). A positive test is a good sign, but a negative doesn't mean a lot. Typically, as your body adjusts to burning ketones, they will stop showing up in your urine. But it doesn't mean you're not in ketosis.

Sorry - I meant this to be a comment to Vivalapaleo...

I would invest in the ketosticks I am in ketosis and tried to be in it for about 4 - 5 months - I cant tell if I am in or not anymore by the taste of my mouth - sometimes I think I have been really good and I test - not in and others I have had some choc and not counted it in my carbs - but was still in. I need to only have about 20 carbs to stay in anything over I am out! Worth the $10
