College student experience, lost 30lbs w/paleo , now I'm struggling to put more on! [pic]

I started at 205lbs and decided I was sick of being incredibly lethargic after meals. I was sick of the hypertension. I was sick of the fluctuating blood sugar levels. I was sick of that fluffy feeling after wheat (you know what I mean, right? Puffy, rank, etc.) alt text

I read Wolff's piece, started smashing the oilve oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, munching all sorts of meat and doing a bit of P90X. Cut out refined sugars, deserts and other goofy modern trivialities. The weight just sort of dissolved:

I'm now left with sort of with more than what I wanted to initially achieve. I appear to be in fairly good shape, albeit a little slim for my liking. The health benefits have been the main focus - I really feel on top of the world. [Note: I actually was hospitalized with a kidney stone the other week - this is a whole other topic altogether...However the doctors kept commenting on my very healthy heart rate :-/]

My question is this: What can I now add to increase weight/mass? I know heavy weights etc., I am going to sort that out myself. I am just having problems finding sigfnificant nutritional tools - I don't think I could eat anymore lard/oils/fats if I tried. I pretty much am a bar of kerrygold grass-fed butter. I eat tonnes of good meat. My calories are sky high, but nothing sticks on unless I eat pizza & croisants (and I'm not going back to that...ever). How unacceptable are sweet potatoes? Can I start ramping these bad boys up even though Cordain isn't the biggest fan? I've heard word of cassava? I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences. Being in university makes things a little less flexible, but I can find a way around most hurdles. I just want some healthy stodge lest I drop below that eerie and undesired 165lb level. Thanks in advance.

I always peel my potatoes deeply, I also eat many varieties (yellow potatoes are my favorite) that I grow myself. Both could be a factor.

Agree with starch and tubers. Weighing in on heartburn and potatoes, I'm in the same boat with Nut that white potatoes give me heartburn. Peeling them helps some, I think. I'm generally good with peeled sweet potatoes.

My point was that if I do 5x5 or mad hypertrophy plans on my current diet then I'll waste away/CNS overload/atrophy etc.. I need more than just fats/protein/veggy carbs, but wherever I looked it seemed as though Cordain wanted nothing to do with starches.

Funny. White taters give me heartburn and sweet ones don't. Either way, totally agree with the starchy tubers. +1

Eat more carbs from starches like potatoes and rice. High fat without carbs will take weight off of you. Add in the carbs and the weight should creep back up.

More carbs, no reason not to. I am gluten-sensitive and most grains disagree with me, but I eat lots of white potatoes, white rice, and other root veg/tubers. Sweet potatoes I have to limit because they give me heartburn (?).

And lift weights.

Why would you want to put on more fat? IMHO it's better to put on muscles if you want to increase your weight==>> strength training (no experience with it myself)

Regarding the kidney stone, are you taking vitamin D and eating a lot of calcium without taking K2? If you are prone to kidney stones and are already supplementing with magnesium, simply switching to magnesium citrate should greatly decrease the likelihood of their formation in the future. In addition, dietary sodium reduction is advisable.

Sweet potatoes are a fine source of good carbs. Sounds like your constitution could also handle a cup or so of white rice -- no nutritional content, but not inflammatory.

Overall, I'd suggest not worrying -- if you feel good, and you're getting stronger, don't obsess about the mirror. Sounds like you're doing great!

Your pics give me the confidence to not be so hesitant about eating nice amounts of butter! I'm primarily concerned about keeping my body fat % low... Hurrah. Congrats on getting in great shape by the way.

Lots of folks swear by milk for putting on mass. Do you yourself have problems with it? Don't worry if it's kosher-paleo or not. Use it if it helps you with your goals.

Hey man I'm exactly in your same shoes. I'm in college, 23 male who since 5th grade has wanted to gain size and escape the awkward, tall, skinny frame I have. I've been paleo for 8 months, and before, I eat massive amounts at every sitting, but remained lenky, tall and skinny. Since Paleo, I went from 180 to 170. To answer your question, I stopped caring about putting weight on. From your pic, you have a nice enough body to get any girl, now you just need the personality. Now I eat just to fill me up, and try and focus on my personality rather than looks (it works much better, and I'm not killing myself in the gym which now looks like insanity).
