Carb intake for women

Hi,

I'm 5"4, 129 pounds and looking to get down to 120 pounds (I gained 6+ pounds over December...)

I have been primal for a little over six months (I.E consumed dairy and peanut butter) but only recently have I gone full paleo. I have lowered my workouts to 3-4 days a week (strength training) and walk 3-5 miles every day at an easy pace.

Alas, I was wondering how many carbs should I consume to lose weight?

I am currently consuming between 50-80g (80% from vegetables, 20% from fruits/nuts)

Thank you everyone for your time!

I'd say, go by what makes you feel the best. Your need for protein is somewhat reduced if you eat more carbs, because you don't need it for gluconeogenesis. It sounds like your body is steering you in the right direction.

I'm somewhere on the lower end of normal range of weight for my height. Stefani Rupert mentioned in her blog PaleoForWomen that skinny/thin women should consider taking about 150 mg of carbs (excluding veggies). I find that to add a good amount of starchy veggies to my diet, I have to substantially reduce my protein intake to balance it out else I get too full. Should I go by what makes me feel good? Or experiment bit more to see how I can incorporate them in my diet?

How many of those carbs are digestible and how many are fiber? You don't ultimately get much from most non-starchy vegetables.

Everyone's different, but I'm female and about the same size as you with a similar activity level and I usually need to eat around 50-70g of carbs from potatoes and sweet potatoes. It messes with my appetite, energy levels, and stress if I go too low carb. But, like I say, everyone's different. Pay attention to how you feel with different amounts of carbs.

50-80g should be fine. Considering you do a lot of exercise, you could try a carb re-feed if you are starting to feel sluggish or if your weight loss plateau's.

Maybe instead of lower your carbs further you could just take out the fruit and replace these carbs with more vegetables. Fruit can cause insulin spikes and reducing this could help your weight loss.
