Anyone else seen this Bayer commercial?

The man in the commercial says, "I'm a marathon runner in absolutely perfect health, and I had a heart attack right out of the blue!"

Does anyone else cringe at those words?

Many of my friends are runners. Either half marathons or marathons. And they all know I am wanting to lose weight, and pressure me into running. At this point, I couldn't do it, even if I wanted to (still recovering from shattering my leg and knee last year) but when I say I don't want to, they seem to snicker at me and have said things along the lines of, "well, you're never going to lose the weight if you don't run. running is the healthiest thing you can do and burns the most calories"

I am doing my physical therapy, and walking 30-60 mins per day, as well as 15-20 mins on a stationary bike or elliptical machine. I lift 5 and 10 pound weights about 4 times per week. Situps, pushups, leg raises. I basically do what I can. As soon as I am physically able I will get back to lifting with my legs, but my recovery is long and slow so I am not sure when that will be.

I am having weight loss, slow and steady which I am totally okay with. More chance of keeping it off in the end.

This was a bit of a rant I guess, rather than an actual question. So if anyone has any words of encouragement or advice, or information about the ill-effects of running please send it my way!

Running a marathon is a huge accomplishment, but it is still putting stress on the body that it is not evolved to handle. Some can handle it ok, but many are just wearing out their body faster than they need. There are studies showing excess wear on the joints and the cardiorespiratory system. It can actually cause the heart to shrink due to trying to become more efficient at sustained elevated heartrate.

Running a marathon is only overdoing it if you don't enjoy it. Most marathon runners I know enjoy it immensely.

I just wanted to add that your running friends are full of shit.

The fat-loss benefits of high-volume aerobic exercise range from "modest" to "none", and they in no way justify the investment in time.

Ignore them, weight loss is all about diet. Some people lose weight slower if they do cardio. Try The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living for details.

Harris admits to being a casual runner himself. He thinks that exercise is a form of hormesis, good for you in small doses, but bad for you if you do it to excess.

Here is the rub though, running makes me feel good (when I run slowly for long distances). I interpret this as a evolved signal that tells me that it's good for me.

I feel what you're saying, but running (especially for health's sake) is not bad, regardless if some people really over do it and harm their bodies.

I run twice a week, probably 3-5 miles at most each run. Most people I know that run run very reasonably. Even the one person I know that has completed a marathon doesn't regularly over do it.

However, don't let your peers pressure you into doing anything you're not comfortable with. Running is one of many ways to get moving. Considering your special needs, take it slow - walking will take you very far.

A healthy diet (yay paleo!) and regular exercise will enable you to reach your goals. Good luck!

Running a marathon is a classic example of overdoing it. Running every now and then is not bad, and may be beneficial. I do a 4-5 mile run every week or so, because I enjoy it, but chronic cardio is not good on the body, immune system, or cardiovascular system. There are better ways to train. As far as weight loss, diet is 80-90%. Eat right, get your hormones fixed, and don't snack. Working out will improve health, but not weight loss, hence the term "working up an appetite."
