6th Week into Paleo/Primal eating.....help.

I love this way of eating, it feels right for me. One of my goals is to shed lbs too. I have been working out regularly for the last 3 yrs, and have the routine and have increased my strength...but have never trimmed down to 'unwrap the package' so to speak. So, one of my goals through this new way of eating is to do that. I'm just not sure about my daily intake. I don't miss bread, crackers, sugar or dairy really....they don't feel hard to give up. With one exception, tortilla chips (which I will have a couple times a month forever, I'm sure).

Here is my ideal day...food wise

Breakfast 2 Scrambled Eggs in Olive Oil OR
Coconut pumpkin pancakes with fruit topping and 2 egg whites Coffee (new addition heavy cream)

Snack 15-20 Almonds or 2T Almond butter 1 cup strawberries or blueberries

Lunch 6 oz steak with scoop guacamole OR Salad w/steak, veggies etc with flax oil WITH Paleo candybar (coconut oil, almonds, coconut & cocoa powder)

Snack Mandarin oranges or a banana Almonds (15-20)

Pre-workout two dried figs soaked in espresso

Post-workout 1T of Honey (sometimes w/banana)

Dinner Steak or Chicken (6ozish) Kale sauteed in oil, with bacon, water chestnuts & garlic 2T of guac for steak

Dessert Fruit w/ mixed nuts (sauteed in coconut oil) OR Some experimental dessert i've made from coconut flour usually involving fruit.

Things I might snack on in addition to this : coconut water w/fruit juices mixed in Egg whites w/ salt Figs w/ prosciutto

I feel like I need more protein & fat ideas. I'm not quite ready to cut back on fruit yet. It feels like enough food, i just don't know if it's too much or not enough. I'm down 5-6 lbs (up a bit because it's the ladytime of the month for me) over 5 weeks.

God, this is looong. Thanks for reading, and any input you might have!

I am right not in flux with my workouts. I used to work with a trainer, specifically training for powerlifting meets. Now, I don't work with him and am flailing a bit. I do cardio (usually sprints or walking uphill) and then weights (traditional type lifting right now because that is what I've been trained to do) I also ride my bike a lot all around the city, whenever I get a chance and run the occasional 5K. I work out about 3-4 times a week, and on 'rest' days have biking and walking thrown in there. I am going to join a crossfit gym in January (soonest I can afford it)

Tim nailed this one.... limit your fruit if you are trying to lose weight. You mentioned you qork out but didnt say what kind, part of Paleo is walking or if you are so inclined, cross fit will help with "unwrapping the package".

I would cook in Bacon fat for your eggs. Also...Eat the whole EGG!! The yolks are where all the good nutrients are!!

Eat Avocados

Don't drink fruit juices. Fruit is likely stalling your weight loss. Don't have to eliminate it, just limit it to a couple times a week.

Coconut oil should be used for cooking...EVOO is dressing oil only, turns bad when cooking with high heat. Skip the Flaxseed Oil as Eric suggested.

Honestly, you are eating too much. Never giving your body time to digest the previous meal. Eat a larger breakfast as Eric suggested, and you will not need to snack, and you just may be full enough to go all the way to dinner. I eat no more than twice per day as I'm just not hungry. Eat that 6oz steak and guac with eggs and that should hold you all day long.

Skip the dessert sugary fruits that late in the day is not good.

Eat protein and fat with every meal as your main source of food, and you will find no need for many of the fruits and snacks throughout the day.

You are doing great and that weight loss is a very good rate to loose weight. You might enjoy reading Taubes Book "Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It".

I would cook in butter instead of olive oil for your eggs. Also keep the yokes on breakfast two...

Also consider left over steak for breakfast in place of breakfast two (from time to time).

For Lunch skip the flax seed oil. Flax seed oil is bad for you.

For Dinner skip the oil and cook in butter or coconut oil (EVCO).

Skip on the fruit juices. Keep the coconut milk.

For the snacks. They are ok for now. However if you eat a bit more breakfast you will likely be able to ditch the morning snack.

Best Wishes and Great Job - Eric

It looks like your fruit intake is a bit on the high side. And while "paleo" pancakes are a great sub for traditional pancakes, I would start thinking about "paleo"-ized food items as cheats. You're getting a lot of fructose and carb to sugar conversion. I would rather have you eat half an avocado instead of all of those fruit servings, and/or nutrient dense veggies.

Am I the only one that thinks that's a lot of nuts to eat in one day? Nuts aren't that great for you and if you are going to eat them, macadamia nuts are better than almonds. I've seen a lot of posts on this site about nuts stalling weight loss because it's so easy to eat them in excess.

I also agree with everyone else that it's too much fruit which, in the end, is still sugar.

I agree that you might consider eating fewer but larger meals. Myself, I eat one large meal per day. I get momentary impulses to eat later, but they are just that--impulses. I don't need food again until the next day and it gives my GI tract a nice rest.

I'm not saying the others are wrong, but we don't all have the same metabolism so I don't say limit fruit but I do recommend eating whole fruits and staying away from juices. I start my one-a-day meal with 8-12 ounces of fatty meat, such as beef fried in bacon fat (and I eat the bacon, of course). I don't always have veggies, but I always have whole fruit and I eat fairly large amounts (a typical example is a whole grapefruit, a whole banana and some berries or melon.) In 4 months I've lost about 30 pounds in a steady and nearly effortless fashion. In fact, the only time my weight loss stalled was when I was eating root starches which is why I don't always eat veggies now. When I do have veggies, I stick with "lean" ones like asparagus or yellow summer squash.

Thanks for all the input! I eat nuts, and I read somewhere, that they are alright, but I should not have more than 4 oz a day if shooting for weight loss, that's about 2-3oz.
I love macadamia nuts, and can certainly switch!

Also, really good advice on the olive oil...I'm so used to cooking with it. I love coconut oil, so that will not be a hard switch to make!

And, I should think of the 'paleo'ized foods as cheats, that's a good way to put it!

I'm going to cut the fruit down. I just love it sooo much! I can do with berries and apricots once a day.

Awesome advice from everyone, thanks!!!
