6.75 inches lost in one week? Is that even possible?

Hi - this is my first post to the site, but I've been reading posts on PaleoHacks since I started eating a paleo diet three weeks ago. My question is this...is it possible I lost 6.75 inches in a week?

I took my measurements last Friday, and this week I am down almost 2 inches on my waist, 2.5 on my hips, an inch off my bust, and a little more off my neck, upper arm, thigh and calf. Despite the fact that I have a relatively idiot-proof body measuring tape, I feel like I must have screwed up the measurements last week.

But maybe not - I was pretty careful to measure correctly. My question is, has anyone with a lot of weight to lose experienced an equally drastic loss of INCHES in a week? I am not weighing myself because it's been my experience that it's not good for me mentally to have a scale around, so I can't speak to the corresponding weight loss, if any, I'm afraid. I'm sure tons of people post similar "Is this normal?" posts, so I apologize if this is a redundant question.

AH! I see. Same answer though. Yep. Possible and probable. Weight loss is anything but linear, dependable, understandable. Take it where you can find it in any way you find it and be really happy to see your hard work paying off. Good job!!

It's my third week though, which is why I was concerned. I figured most water weight would be gone by now.

Carb and salt consumption both tend to drop pretty dramatically when you start paleo, you release a lot of water that happens. It's a pretty standard reaction to any diet, really. Congratz on your progress so far!

Very possible indeed. Congrats on a great first week and here's to many more! Things are going to slow down so you won't see numbers like that again most likely but enjoy the sweet victory and I if you just stick with it you'll have many more to come.

Sure! Dropping water weight will do that and it's mostly what you lose in the first few weeks.

And congrats on not using a scale. It's not a very helpful tool for most folk, IMO.

Just want to point out, you didn't really lose 6.75 inches in any specific location, you merely added up them inches from multiple locations.

And well, thats fantastic by the way, but I am not terribly shocked. I found that I have lost an inch on the waist for every 6-7 lbs, and once I really did lose 14 pounds in one week, and thus slightly over 2 inches.

Yes. I almost didn't believe it either, but I accidently grabbed a pair of smaller jeans that I hadn't worn in a long time and it was a huge WOW for me. Because I was quite over I'm still going down fairly quickly but I really need to up the exercise now.

My N=1 is yes it. It's also possible to lose weight and gain inches around the middle if you are quite overweight. I had a few frustrating weeks where I dropped 3lbs, got stronger but actually gained inches. Digestion, fat sagging a bit being off in your measurement spot by 1"...it varies. The goal is the trend, how you look, feel, perform and how your clothes fit.
