Hack this weight gain!

Never posted here before, but I think it's about time for some feedback. Here's my story- started low carb paleo 3 yrs. ago, but not to lose weight, just for awesome health. I started at 110 lbs. at 5ft. 3in. Ended up losing about 15 lbs. anyways. Felt amazing for the first 6 mos. or so. Skin super soft and clear, nice muscle definition without much exercise, no stinky breath upon waking, energy through the roof (woke up at 5am everyday on my own and biked around just for fun). Life. was. good.

Fast forward 6 mos. later-don't come near me or I'll bite your head off! Skin drying out, more prone to zits now. Hair looks stringy and damaged for no good reason. Let's see, what else...oh yeah, headaches every time I ate, extreme fatigue from any movement, bought ketostix for fun and they showed deep purple, and then finally I woke up one night covered in sweat with a racing heart that caused a major panic attack. I thought my blood sugar dropped while sleeping so I downed a carton of orange juice and a few bananas. Problem solved.

Stumbled upon Matt Stone's site and immediately started gorging on carbs. Felt much, much better, but now I'm stuck at 139 lbs. Yup, I gained THAT much. I'm assuming it's mostly water because I look much smaller in the morning, but now I'm starting to feel the way I did before paleo again. No energy, sleeping in really late, etc. I never had a weight problem in my life, but now I'm stuck with this. WTF happened??? How do I get my metabolism back up and running? Did I end up in starvation mode and now I'm paying for it? It's really starting to piss me off! Thanks for any info. you have! Peace.

cd-yes, that's what I'm trying now (about 100-120 carbs). I think I was 'addicted' to the high of losing weight and fasting and it was hard to break at the time.

I'm not 'gorging' anymore, but when I was it was mostly grains and sugary things like ice cream, maple syrup, molasses. Right now I'm following PHD (white rice, tubers, roots, some fruit) and I do feel better, but I'm not really losing at a rate that I can tell any difference. Matt Stone changes his mind constantly about how to reach health and I feel like taking his advice helped me get out of a dangerous place, BUT I don't think it's useful in the long run.

Rather than this extreme VLC then extreme carb -- How about eating in the normal range. Try ~100g carbs, if too much then lower. If too little, than increase.

From what you described, that is very, very likely.

Carbs didn't help? Granted, you said you "gorged" on them. What do you consider "carbs" - are we talking starchy roots and tubers, or potato chips, pasta, and bread?

In my case, my early experiments with V/LC eating lead me to at least one hypoglycemic event - not fun at all. I'm very active, and incorporating plenty of starchy roots and tubers has helped me maintain activity levels and weight.

Summary: you don't sound like you do well on VLC, so eat carbs - but make sure they are paleo carbs and stop gorging!
