A weird feeling. Is it paleo related?

I have brain fog, which I've read can be common. I have more trouble spelling words, reading, talking, thinking more so than usual. I now have a new sensation(at least past 3-4 days). My right leg feels really cold, weak and a little wobbly when walking. Kind of like the feel of it waking up after falling asleep. I can also feel the muscles twitching a bit. My right arm might been affected too, but it's not as pronounced.

I was wondering if this is common for my situation on Paleo. I've been eating Paleo for one month. I feel like I haven't made the greatest choices for food (the fruit). I eat meats, I drink heavy cream, and I eat fruit, mainly berries and oranges. I haven't eaten much vegetables recently. I eat low calorie. I have't really counted, but its around 800-1200 most days I think. I'm not trying to eat low, but sometimes it just ends up that way. Most the month I have been sedentary. I'm in the obese weight range if that also helps.

If this is Paleo related, what can I change to improve the feeling and overall get me on track.

Put coconut milk in an ice cube tray and freeze. Then you can pop out as many as you want and put in coffee. After a minute, its melted into nice cream!:)

You must eat! Especially if you're overweight - your body NEEDS CALORIES.

I just throw a pat of butter in.Usually add ginger,cinnamon,sage with it.There are traditional techniques,but they aren't necessary.

Add a tablespoon of coconut oil. Each has 117 cal. Only add to warm or hot drinks. It goes solid below 76 F.

I'm definitely going to stop eating fruit. I ate a big breakfast of about 1500 calories (eggs and sausage) and took a multivitamin. It was really interesting reflecting on my change in attitude towards food. If my meals were pasta or any other junk, I could eat a big bowl easily and want more, but cutting out the carbs and eating mainly fat and protein, I don't over eat. Obviously I'm under eating and I think that's because I'm not use to eating healthy and filling foods in such quantity.

Can you talk more about the butter tea/ butter coffee? I'm finding that I don't love heavy cream, but I do like fat and calories added to my beverages. Do you just add a pat of butter and let it melt, or do you do some fancy Tibetan thing?

Agreed. Must eat more good stuff (meat and veg) and less fruit. Too much fruit puts you on the sugar/insulin rollercoaster and prevents the fat burning that you so desire. Check into nutrient deficiencies as recommended by several answers such as magnesium and potassium. A little walking would be good - assuming your joints can take it. If not, lose some weight and get your energy levels up, then start walking. I cannot, in good conscience, abstain from upvoting any answer that begins with "Dude".

Dude, you need to eat more. If you're drinking heavy cream you shouldn't have any problem getting more than 800 calories a day.

I'm the guy that just wrote about not eating enough while IF'ing and I always get at least 1400-1600 a day (without dairy it's much more difficult!)

  1. Ditch the fruits for the moment. If anything, eat vegetable like spinach (not in place of meats, though!)
  2. Get some real fatty ground beef, like a pound, mix in spices (I usually do sea salt, fresh black pepper, rosemary, cumin, paprika, some old bay, and a few splashes of mexican hot sauce) and 2 or 3 egg yolks. Make it into two big old burgers and panfry 'em nice and slow. Enjoy.
  3. Lots of egg yolks. Choline helps with brain function.
  4. Maybe some wild salmon and/or sardines? (If you don't supplement O3)
  5. If brain fog persists, add in some safe starches- potato, sweet potato, or white rice. I find I do better with sweet potato or white potato than rice, however.

Most of all, eat more in general. Eat more beef and lamb and wild game. Eat less fruit. Don't be afraid of a little starch.

You will feel better.

Your symptoms are concerning. While they could be related to nutrient insufficiencies or transitory discomfort while ketoadapting (ie low carb flu), it could also be a couple of serious medical issues. It may be worth seeing your doctor.

Having said that, if your diet doesn't contain either 1)organ meats or 2)supplements you are getting insufficient amounts of magnesium, several b vitamins, zinc and selenium.

When severe selenium deficiency is accompanied by severe overall malnutrition, symptoms can include weakness or pain in the muscles, discoloration of the hair or skin, and whitening of the fingernail beds.

Early signs of magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and weakness. As magnesium deficiency worsens, numbness, tingling, muscle contractions and cramps, seizures (sudden changes in behaviors caused by excessive electrical activity in the brain), personality changes, abnormal heart rhythms, and coronary spasms can occur [1,3-4]. Severe magnesium deficiency can result in low levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia). Magnesium deficiency is also associated with low levels of potassium in the blood (hypokalemia) [1,19-20].

The lack of variety food intake that some fall prey to, likely precipitates nutritional deficiences which then cause other problems. Optimally, you'll move towards including a greater variety of animal parts in your daily diet - until then, some supplementation is in order.

I can't imagine a scenario in the EEA in which we didn't eat the whole animal, yet few in the paleo and primal communities have embraces "head-to-tail", "nose-to-tail" or "whole animal" eating. Relying on muscle meat only does not nutritional sufficiency make.

Where traditional diets are still eaten, and with the data available regarding traditional diets in the past, it's perfectly clear that the whole animal was eaten, often with a bias toward organs (brain, lungs, liver, kidney et al), glands (thymus, adrenals et al) and fat.

There is no risk* of eating whole animal but possibly significant risk if we don't.

You need to eat a lot more fat and less protein and ditch the oranges and berries and anything else that has any sugar.

Your body doesn't know what to do the mixed signals you are send it. Am I susposed to be ready to burn sugar or and I susposed to be ready to burn protein and fat?

Breakfast: 5 eggs panfried in coconut oil. 1/8 pound bacon. Small yam microwaved til just soft, sliced into rounds, panfried in coconut oil or butter til just brown. This will get you through til dinner.

Dinner: A large green leafy salad with leafy lettuce..not iceberg...red and green bell peppers, tomatoes, avocado, cucumber with dressing olive oil and vinegar

Steamed veggies slathered in butter so you will absorb the nutrients better.

You get more food in you, your brain fog will clear. You will slide into ketosis and your body will start to heal itself.

And just get up, go outside, and walk 15 min a day on the first day...then 2nd day 16 minutes and so on til you feel comfortable at whatever length of time you decide is right for you. You need to get in touch with your outside environment by touching trees, rocks, fences, if you can walk on grass do so barefooted.

Lastly I suspect you are severely deficient in Vit D3 as most people are. You can get enough Vit D3 by walking outside with shorts and no shirt for 20 min a day...or you can supplement with Vit D3 10000IU a day for three months then back it down to 5000IU per day. Helps tremendously in increasing your immune system and helps with mood.

You can heal yourself, but you need to get through this rough spot now.

If it happened after going Paleo, my guess would be you're not getting all the nutrients you need.

Paleo on itself is not going to make you sick, it's just not possible nor logical.

It's hard to tell what is missing in your diet but you should run your food through something like Fitday just to get an idea of where you're at.

My first guess would be Magnesium because it's somewhat difficult to get enough from food alone. Could also be Potassium, but you really should use Fitday to really understand where the culprit is.

Your symptoms being on the right side, along with language difficulty seem more concerning than just diet-related symptoms. I'd see a physician.

Kill the fruit, eat more grass fed meats,and get moving.The getting up and not being sedentary is very, very important in improving overall mood and brain function.Drink water,lots of it. Not technically paleo,but unsweetened dark chocolate(try Ghirardelli,it's in the baking section) helps me get going when I feel sluggish.So does coffee or black tea w/butter in it.You would also be wise to check for additives in your cream.Carrageen, a seaweed thickener, is often added.It can cause problems in some people similar to MSG.

get your thyroid checked. it's easy to become iodine deficient / hypothyroid on a paleo diet. as bad as junk food is, it's typically high in iodized salt.

if you're deficient, slowly increasing kelp supplements and then switching to iodoral for a while can help. the us rda for iodine is too low. look to typical japanese consumption. also look into your b12 level (again using japanese benchmarks rather than the usa's).

I agree that you are probably eating too little. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include rapid heartbeat, hunger, confusion, fatigue, cold sweats, shakiness and headache.

If you don't start feeling better when you raise your calories, you should probably visit your MD.

The fruit is probably counter-productive, causing too much insulin release, but I would also ask if you are using artificial sweeteners, especially Equal. In 1986, I was on a diet and used lots of Equal, and started having all kinds of memory problems.
