Water consumption

I know it is advised that people on the paleo diet should not need to consume much water as our ancestors only had water when it was available to them, but I am wondering if it might actually be ok if there is actual fat to lose. Yes it is true that cavemen did not need to drink much water but when we are talking about fatloss it would not have been much help to them as they carried very little fat on their bodies, but water is a very good aide in fatloss as it flushes it from your system quicker, I am thinking of adding at least 2 litres of water daily to my paleo diet

Drinking water is well. i think paleo people had a ear for springs and creeks. so if there where fresh water running they drink a lot and tried to stay close to it. ithink so...

Our ancestors drank water when they were thirsty and usually had access to a close source of some kind. They followed their instincts and listened to what their bodies naturally told them. Water is also obtained from the food we eat. No one had to tell our ancestors to drink 5 glasses a day.

Hydration is a highly individual thing. All of the recommendations for "8 glasses a day" etc, are as founded on poor conventional wisdom as the USDA recommendations.

Generally speaking though, if your urine is close to clear, you're well hydrated. This is not to be confused with the neon colored urine from high Vitamin A intake though. :-)

Most other animals get the majority of their water intake from the food that they eat, and only supplement water intake by actually drinking water....so we're largely safe to do the same.

On the other hand though, if someone is trying to lean-out, upping water intake can be beneficial because it turns on the body's natural diuretic process, which can help eliminate excess water retention.

Our ancestors definitely sought out camps and homes close to potable water, and I see no problem with drinking as much as sounds good. I don't think, however, that we must drink 5+ glasses each day just to maintain a decent level of health- in fact, if you get plenty of veggies and fruits in a day, I'm quite sure you could do just fine without a single glass of liquid, at least for a few days. That said, I do find water both cleansing and refreshing, particularly with some lemon, cucumber, or ginger added to the pitcher.

It looks like for burning fat, lot of water is required. There is something about physiology of muscle that requires it for proper fat burning. Tim Feriss also reported in his book that his parent couldn't loose weight with his protocol and that addition of more water solved the problem.

PRO:

  • Detoxification.
    • Increased protein intake causes increase in ammonia (NH3), a toxic product of protein and nucleic acid metabolism. If you happen to have higher ammonia load because of the lack of adaptation to protein intake [possible liver problems or genetics with urea cycle], you need water to dissolve it.
  • Intestines clearing.
  • Thirst is often misplaced for hunger.
  • Dehydration cause cell to become hypertonic (shrink in size because of osmosis).

CON:

  • Minerals dissolve in water and you lose them.
  • Kidneys have to work harder, although I doubt very much it is a fragile organ.
    • Possible hypertension if your kidneys don't function well.
  • Water intoxication, but you have to be serious idiot to drink that much water in so little time.
  • Overhydration causes cells to become hypotonic (gain in size because of osmosis)

If anybody knows more reasons pro or con, I would appreciate to hear them.

Mark Sisson says drink when thirsty. Dr Eades says the people who are the most successful losing weight on a low carb diet are the ones who drink a lot of water.

I say, do what works for you.

I don't drink 64oz of water per day or whatever some people recommend, but I don't feel great unless I have at least two large glasses of water in a day, this is aside from rehydrating after workouts. Generally, I drink enough water so that I pee clear at least once a day.

If you are trying to lose weight which often means a very low carb diet with lots of protein and fat, I think drinking water helps prevent strain on your kidneys and digestive system by flushing those systems out.

I drink 1.5 liters during the workday amd about .8 liters during my workout.

Cold water will increase your metabolic rate as well. I drink quite a bit of water and green tea a day and have for quite some time
