Alkaline/ionized water or snake oil?

I went into a "health"/fitness store the other day. They mostly sell whey powders and body building supplements. While is was in there browsing around to amuse myself, several people came in for water refills. I was curious why people would come here for water when every grocery store and even self serve water stations are available everywhere. not only that, but they were charging $10 for an 18 litre (5 gal) refill. That's 5 times more that I normaly pay. Since my family of 4 goes through around two of these a week, that would be $20 just for water. The owner gave me a big demonstration/sales pitch about the body's ph balance and cancer for the justification for the price. So, when i got home i naturally looked up alkaline water on the internet and this site. nothing here about it, but there is a good site debunking it here http://www.chem1.com/CQ/ionbunk.html and several to back up the stores claim. What do you think? Anyone drinking this stuff? Is it worth the $$. The cheapest ionizer for home use starts around $1000.

i appreciate this, but for those of us whose bodies are quite broken, particularly our intestines/guts... are there other considerations to make?

Yes, I know, however, if you have some gastric problem which is not atypical your basal gastric pH level is higher, 4-7 is not uncommon especially with older people and their tendency to host helicobacter which reduces acidity. Other then that, food will buffer it as you know altho this depends of macronutrient ratio.

Gastric pH is 1-2. This water is pH 9 (for the sake of round numbers). Thus gastric juices are 1000-10000 times more acidic than this water is basic. You're not neutralizing significant amounts of gastric acids with this water.

this is what I figured. I have access to well water, which is non chlorinated, so it should be better than city tap.

Your body has an intricate and highly reliable system for maintaining Ph balance within a carefully controlled window. The acid/base diet and similar practices have been studied and shown to be 100% nonsense.

Haha! that totally reminded me of a computer tech that came into my office last month. He was a distributor for these metal canteens made in China that would balance alkaline water, or something, he went on and on about it -but I kind of tuned him out. (There is no worse sales pitch for a health claim than from an unhealthy looking person). It was hilarious to hear his sales pitch though. He even went so far as to claim that the simple canteen had the power to purify water as well. I tried to get him to fill up in the toilet, but he resisted. He did fill up with our nasty city water though -full of fluoride. I assured him that if I was interested I was sure call and purchase from him. HAHA

Ionized alkaline water is an obvious choice for being fit and staying healthy. Tyent USA is one of the best brand within the Water Ionizers category that has set its own new standards for alkaline water ionizer. They are the true pioneers in water ionizer industry, through their innovations in design and technology. Alkaline Water ionizer is the best way one can get the purest form of alkaline water. Alkaline Water can help you stay healthy by cleansing the acidic waste from your body daily. Ionized alkaline water from water ionizers is the key to good health.

Enjoy incredible health benefits of ionized alkaline water!!!!!

Its not necessarily snake oil like others claim without any info on this.

Prolom water from Serbia is recommended by almost all doctors to improve treatments of kidney sand and/or stones and other gastrointestinal problems. Its pH is 8.8 and it contains low level of minerals. Ofcourse, this water is completely natural from the most ecological place in Serbia (see info on site) and doesn't depend on ionization.

Is it true, I don't know, but its mainstream medicine here. To be honest I feel great drinking it on high protein diet and sometimes I even crave it. Unlike other waters I can drink 2L of Prolom in an hour or so.

BUT, prolonged usage is not recommended as far as I know. One problem might be derangement of acid barrier. I.E. you might buffer your stomach acid which protects you from h. pylori and other pathogens.

From Gastric acid barrier to ingested microorganisms in man: studies in vivo and in vitro

The present study demonstrates strict pH dependence of the bactericidal activity of gastric juice, ie, prompt killing of bacteria at pH less than 4 0. When the pH of normal gastric juice was raised to greater than 4-0, no bactericidal activity was detected. Pernicious anaemia gastric juice, likewise, demonstrated no bactericidal activity unless acidified to pH below 4-0, where it behaved identically to normal gastric juice ... Our studies in vivo of intragastric bactericidal activity demonstrated prompt reduction in the number of bacteria in the normal stomach but no reduction in the achlorhydric stomach. Hence, the lack of detectable antibacterial activity in the achlorhydric stomach would appear to account for the profuse gastric bacterial flora found in these patients. With an increase in pH, as in the hypochlorhydric and achlorhydric stomachs, the total number of organisms per ml of gastric content increases

Basal gastric juice acidity is very high, around 2 and since you typically drink water between meals, it makes sense that you will buffer this acid and allow pathogen proliferation. This effect depends, ofcourse, on the frequency of water intake, since water AFAIK leaves stomach ASAP and intestines have neutral pH so alkaline water is not a problem there I guess. So I am not certain about this, maybe this effect doesn't exist.

The other thing is it is not mineralised so it can lead toward mineral deficiencies by diluting them and promoting urine loss. This effect probably exists but it depends on your complete nutritional profile and might or might not be in effect for specific people.

In specific context drinking alkalyzed water is bad, i.e. with protein meal.

Now, acid/base balance diets are probably crap as body has its own system to regulate this, but this might not be and probably isn't the mechanism of work of this water. For instance, specific kidney stones tend to form in acidic urine, so alkalizing it might make sense - Linus Pauling was talking about this regarding two forms of vitamin C - sodium ascorbate and ascorbic acid.
