How you guys decide what to down-vote?

Yup, pretty self explanatory.

I haven't wielded my awesome down-voting power yet, but might do it sometime. Hopefully it will only be when an argument is very illogical or overly-negative. But I did get an urge to do it when I just disagreed, and that doesn't seem healthy.

Downvoters, do you have heuristics you use, or is it just instinct?

Yeah man...when the conversation gets heated, comments are where it's at. But they can't be downvoted, which leaves a hole in my heart.

Sadly comments can't be downvoted, only flagged or upvoted

A starting place for using the site is the "faq" section, which addresses up-voting and down-voting. Of course, we have a lot of latitude to decide what constitutes "misinformation." Also, I believe it's polite and helpful to include a comment when you downvote someone.

I only downvote things that I know to be wrong. Since I'm fairly new at the paleo / primal thing I don't know much for certain. So I haven't down voted anything yet.

I can't imagine wanting to downvote for any other reason. But I guess like other social media sites that some people let their emotions guide their actions rather than reason.

I don't think disagreeing with someone, or thinking someone is negative or wrong justifies a downvote.

This is 'Nutritional Science' (Empirically led for the most part) not 'Nutritional How Do I Feel About This'.

Many people feel that eating brown bread and rice is good for you. They could come here and feel justified in downvoting us all.

So stick to what you know IMO.

I will especially downvote if I think something is both wrong and said obnoxiously. If said politely with good intent, I am more likely to just disagree in comment but not always downvote. I will sometimes downvote if I think something is overly simplistic (Example: fructose is poison)and it has gotten many upvotes I think are undeserved, again, more likely to do it if the post sounds obnoxious or rude. I will be less likely to downvote if no one else has upvoted. I guess it just irks me to see upvotes for something I think is stupid. (Yes, I can be an elitist _itch, sorry in advance) I will sometimes upvote if I think someone has gotten a lot of downvotes I think are too harsh. I guess it just irks me if I think people are being bullies (yes, I also have a soft side) I will often leave a comment for downvotes, but may not if someone else has already commented the same thing I would have said. I am less likely to comment for upvotes because I often don't have that much to add other than "Yup! I agree!"

Egregiously terrible, incomplete or fallacious answers that aren't the least bit helpful, and especially ones that are blatantly false, simply because then people won't read them and buy into whatever they are saying. To vote someone down they have to be detrimental to the discussion.

I would down vote if someone's comment is trying to shut people up.

If the post/comment:

  • is so far off the reservation that it doesn't correlate to the site's purposes,
  • doesn't contribute to the conversation(s) at hand (being way off topic)
  • is spam
  • is rude/extremely argumentative

then it gets downvoted (or in the comment's case, not voted for at all).

I have been tempted to downvote an answer which didn't answer anything and should really be a comment. The irony is that if it was correctly posted as a comment, nobody would be able to downvote it no matter how much they disagree!
