Increasing TOPICAL/TRANSDERMAL absorption of retinoids?

Since they're fat-soluble, would applying some sort of oil like coconut oil, EVOO or neem onto the skin before/in combination with the retinoid increase transdermal absorption?

I also heard that applying topical retinoids on damp skin increases their absorption as well (I can't imagine why that would be.)

Oils might also be a physical barrier of sorts, buffering and reducing the absorption of the retinoid into the skin. Can anyone clarify this conundrum?
