Do you know HOW Vit D assists the body in warding off diseases?

In our pursuit of a paleo lifestyle, many of us...me included...advocate supplementation with Vit D3 or suning ourselves with 20 min a day half naked in full sun at midday.

I have seen references from Stephan Guyenet and others that it increases the immune system. It also helps prevent dental problems.

But do you know how Vit D3 increases the immune system and works to keep diseases at bay?

I was very glad to see the following article in the UK Telegraph regarding a study in Copenhagen which identifies T cells in our bodies that are activated and armed by the presence of Vit D3 to seek out and kill invading organisms.

Could Vit D3 be the magic bullet for paleos to live a long and healthy life with the best quality of life possible? Even exceeding the elimination of wheat, corn, and sugar?

I don't know but I will keep supplementing with my Now Brand 5000IU daily to keep my serum level between 70 and 100ng/mL...which Dr K says he wants his patients to be at.

In roaming around paleohacks, I re-read this link about D3 and especially Dr. Grace's answer. http://paleohacks.com/questions/15659/vitamin-d3-again#axzz1HMMw6f40

To live a long life is a story for a blog. There are fifteen variables one has to consider about a healthy long life span. Paleo hit about four of them. The rest matter too. Paul Jaminet has asked me to write himsomething up for his blog and I need to get that done this week.

Just for you I will tell you why I do it. It simulates breaks in the stream of consciousness. Honestly it has become second nature. I apologize for my brain.

Reading.......the data is overwhelming. But reading it and putting in a framework is key. I am fortunate because I read it.....I prescribe it and then I see the outcomes. Seeing is believing but seeing a persons life change......well I cant describe that look on their face. That is why I read.

Dr. Stasha Gominak thinks it's because adequate D3 levels enable restorative sleep: http://drgominak.com/vitamin-d
