My Blood Test : Hypoglycemia, Vitamin D deficiency, too low hemoglobin, too low ureum

Answered on August 19, 2014

What does these things all mean? I also had a mold allergy and a grass pollen allergy (that mold one is new). The blood test is several weeks old now, after the blood test I started doing paleo but still get brain fog and feel very weak. As I have an exam tomorrow, it's a disaster.

During november-december I ate only white bread, candy, peanuts and pizza during the week (during weekends I ate tons of french fries and tons of meat). From january-may I ate mostly vegan (tons of fruit, some almonds, tons of apples, ...) Got real sick on that vegan diet, was already kinda bad in january.

What I eat on a typical day : - 3 egg yolks + 1 egg white scrambled - 350g broccoli - 700g onions (2-3 big onions) - 200-300g beef (or on some days 200g fish and 100-150g beef), sometimes organic, never grass fed as it's impossible to find here - 1-2 avocados - 3-6 tablespoons of coconut oil - 500g green beans - Some garlic, some turmeric, some cayenne pepper, green rooibos tea 2-3 times a day

Only my calcium and vitamin D intake is too low if I put this into Cron-O-Meter, though I supplement vitamin D and my water (= Vittel from France) has 200mg calcium for every liter and I drink 2-3 liters a day.

Supplements : - Zinc, Selenium, Chromium, and Vitamin C blend for my allergies but it doesn't really help though my skin improves way faster when I take zinc - Vitamin D 1200IU - Udo's Choice Probiotics Blend (No idea if that helps, though stomach problems are gone, but that may also be the result of cutting out grains 100%, even quinoa)

Thanks!!

PS. My skin has improved a lot since may, but I still wonder why I'm so tired. It's only been a week on strict paleo, I used to eat some quinoa/brown rice too. I don't eat fruit as I'm guessing candida is an issue for me (hypoglycemia + mold allergy + acne worsened in january - may).

PPS. I'm especially curious what people have to say about the ureum. and the hemoglobin. I'm living close to a highway but within 5 days I'm off to France or whatever part of the world has no roads and lots of nature. After that I'm going to the beach in Belgium where I'll stay 2 full weeks.

I'm eating 2C at the moment so that's solved :D. I should do a blood test again, but I don't think I can just ask for one.

You need to start using vitamin C megadose (4x4g) and 100 mg CoQ10, some good form. It will all be OK then. Trust me.

:D, I listen to Bee when it comes to candida, she says there's no such thing as die-off. Only healing reactions. I'm reducing carbs more and more, today I did an intermittent fast (I remember last year doing an intermittent fast every day, I only ate dinner, and even though I ate extremely unhealthy, I looked/felt way healthier). Thanks for answering already 2 of my questions! I have a lot of sinus problems (has been like this for a looong while now), and as the weather website indicated yesterday and today : the allergy meter is high. I need vacation.

Even I thought I was pretty low carb but I had to experiment with the right carbs at the right time. Plus, I had to fiddle with my protein intake. I'm telling ya...it is a lot of fiddling to find the proper balance!

I like bacon's comments. It's probably best to track for a while then modify. It looks like you are on the right tracks though. I don't know anything about the candida diet (or Bee's). I was taking 5000IU in the winter but here in California it's pretty sunny these days so I haven't been taking it lately.

@Korion - my friend's doc told her to take 25,000 IU daily! So, don't be afraid to bump it way up!

Nope, I eat more than enough, did you see the amount of fats I eat? I eat 150-200g of fat every day, around 100g of protein and around 100g of carbs. I feel full, never hungry, just weak legs. Thanks a lot for your answer though. As I'm on a candida diet to cure my skin problems/allergies I don't eat nuts or starchy/sugary things. I'm on Bee's (healingnaturallybybee.com) diet btw. It's still far from Atkins, but it's pretty low-carb (I eat more carbs than she recommends at the moment, but I'm planning on eating more fats).

I already get a lot of vitamin A, not all of it is retinol, but I feel like I'm taking too much supplements.

Along with the supplements you already take I would also recommend vit k2 mk4 and retinol(Vit A). Vit A u can get a decent amount through food so aim for around 15k IU through food and supplementation.

Given that you've been at it a week, I suspect your body is going through some heavy changes. You may want to check out the threads on low-carb flu:

Keep track of what you're eating (like you already are) and do your best to increase/decrease foods as you move ahead. I noticed I was very tired and fatigued and after bumping up my carbs and eating them only at night, the energy went back up.

Hi Korion, I replied to your comment over on your nuts thread. http://paleohacks.com/questions/40922/almonds-and-mold/41007#41007

I'm happy to see you're eating more. Sorry I don't know anything about increasing hemoglobin and ureum, but I'm glad to see you've decided to up your D supps.

Perhaps consider that you may feel tired because your hemoglobin is low -- your body isn't efficiently carrying oxygen to your cells.

I don't know if 100-150 grams of carbs would be low enough to cause low-carb flu, especially for someone coming from an already restricted diet, although I do suspect much of your carb intake can be considered fiber, which isn't used as energy by the body.

Another factor re: tiredness/weakness (take this one with a grain of salt, but since you're already working in the candida paradigm it's worth considering) may be that you are killing off the bad gut-bugs with the pro-biotics and dietary changes you've made and it's causing, um, "die-off". I am sceptical, but remain open-minded about this.

By the by, did you see this candida thread? Not terrrribly useful, but interesting.

You may not be eating enough. The food you listed looks like only enough for 2 meals. Consider eating another egg or 2, some leafy green (kale, collards, etc.) or other carb filled veggies (yams/sweet potatoes, root vegetables etc.). And I almonds are my default snack when I'm feeling snacky.

How much sleep are you normally getting? I'm a student as well and know how hard it can be to get on a regular sleep schedule. If you get get to bed at a reasonable hour and sleep for at least 8 hours, that would be a good start.

For Vit D, in the winter I was taking 5000IU daily but I try to spend at least an hour outside a day when I can. Your trip to the beach should help a lot w/ your Vit D :)

That sounds like a hefty dose if vitamin C to me, considering the broccoli. So much onion would give me serious cramps. Replace most of with meat.

You might have some kind of deficiency or hereditary anemia. Check serum Iron, transferrin saturation, and ferritin for Iron, as well as folic acid and B12. Even Paleos can have B12 deficiency due to malabsorption. If your MCV and MCH are low, you should consider Thalassemia minor as a possible cause and proceed with hemoglobin electrophasis.

You should increase the vit D amount as suggested by other members, you can go up to 10k IU per day until desired levels are achieved.
