I am looking into purchasing my first pair --I am female--shoes size 7.5-8. I will be using them for mostly walking --some times on trails. What style and size suggestions?

You also want to make sure that they work with your foot shape. I can't wear VFF because my second toe is too long. I've heard a few others talk about problems with toe fit.

Definitely take your time breaking them in. I did the "Let's run a few miles in my new shoes" bit when I got my first pair and had VERY sore calves for the next few days. In the end, preferable to the shin splints I got from traditional running shoes, but eminently avoidable if you take it slow :)

You can wash them in the washing machine!! Definitely not a bad idea for shoes typically worn sans socks :-)

My suggestion would be to go to a store that sells them and try them on. The sizes are european. So it can be difficult to guesstimate online - plus they all fit differently.

When you get a pair that fits correctly - ignore all opinions for a week. They take about that long to "break in" and get even more comfy.

Another tip - Dont go running 3 miles in them your first time around. Youll be in pain. Wear them around the house for awhile, then some casual walks, short jogs, then runs. Preferably? On grassy areas.

Vibrams are sized differently than standard American shoe sizes. You want them to be fairly snug and not have as much space between toe and end of shoe that you'd want in typical sneakers. If at all possible, I highly recommend seeing if any stores near you sell them to try on in person. Vibram also has sizing information on their website that should help with that. Style also is really dependent on what you intend to do in the shoes. I really do think their website is user friendly and gives a lot of information on what the different styles are good for. My biggest recommendation when it comes to Vibrams is to slowy work into wearing them-- don't put them on the first time and run 5 miles or anything like that-- they change the way you move, and you'll be using muscles and other things that you don't rely on much with standard shoes, so you can easily injure yourself getting into them too quickly!

I have a pair of kso's and bikila's. I tried mine on in the store before I ordered a pair. if I remember correctly without looking in my closet, they are both size 38.

Have you checked their website or do you have access to try-on pairs? I have the KSO style and really like them. They've lasted a very long time and don't show any signs of wear other than smell : ) they work for about everything, even trail walking/jogging.

I'd recommend trying on at a store to make sure your pinky toe is able to fit. I've heard this as a complaint of VFFs that the pinky toe spot is uncomfortable and unnecessary. Some other companies put the 4th toe with the pinky toe to solve this. Fila does this but I can't comment on those. Good luck and enjoy!

One other thing. The next pair I get will be a color that is more versatile with street clothes..like black. Mine are greyish and definitely look like toe shoes from a distance.
