My girlfriend has these. She says that they were hereditary. How are they treated?

Encyclopedia of herbs by A. Chevallier. He considers it a major herb.

I believe that you can prevent them / prevent them from getting worse by moving around frequently, keeping your leg muscles in good shape, and not standing for long periods of time. I don't think they can be removed or cured. Mainstream cosmetic treatments involve removing or destroying the veins in question (less horrible than it sounds because you have plenty of other veins deeper in your legs that can do the same job).

I have never heard of lemon being used as an herb. I'll have to Google that (8 There are herbs for leg circulation which might be of help like Butchers Broom. Thigh high support hose, walking, eating a diet that works for you, inversion therapy, not wearing constricting clothes around your waist. There is lots to do to improve it or keep from getting worse.

Not really true. My mother and father had them long before my age, and I do not. Fruit and vegetable intakes help (I get about 40% by calories, or 85% weight, fruits and vegetables), but the main anti-varicose herb is lemon.

They're caused by failure of the little check valves in your veins, often due to the attack of bacteria. These are many of the same strains that attack teeth, so brush floss and salt rinse. Make sure you move around. Prolonged sitting/standing at work make this worse. Yoga type exercise, especially inverted poses, or just plain handstands held for 30 seconds to let the blood drain from your legs will help. If you adopt a more active lifestyle to keeps that blood flowing, they won't go away but won't get any worse. That's mostly advice from personal experience, here's a link describing the mechanism: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18453484
