Vegetarians lower risk Osteoporosis ?

I was surprised when I read this in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition:

The conclusion is that vegetarians have a LOWER risk of osteoporosis than do omnivores.

I thought all the phytic acid would have impaired mineral absorption.

What's up with that?

A friend of mine has terrible osteoporosis and I was going to suggest a paleo diet, being careful to avoid phytic acid. Maybe I won't suggest paleo after all. What am I missing?

However, in: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18364334 , no statistical differences in BMD were observed between vegetarians and non-vegetarians of either sex.

How the heck did you find some ancient study like that that gives essentially the opposite of nearly every other study out there? Googling 'bone density vegetarianism' comes up with this: http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/90/4/943.full first which shows lower bone density in vegetarians than omnivores, though they claim it to be 'clinically insignificant.'

Also remember a study (somebody might find it Googling) where animal protein consumption correlated positively with bone density, while plant protein consumption correlated negatively.

Yes, ovolactos are as good as full paleo when it comes to bones. Vit. D, K2, and calcium are high. Except for bone broth and CLO, they have all the main weapons in their arsenal.

They were ovo-lacto vegetarians. Which means they consume dairy products (high in calcium and fortified with vitamin D3) and eggs (also a good source of vitamin D3) so I don't see what the issue is. Vegetables like kale, seaweed, carrots, grape leaves, collards, and spinach are all high in calcium as well. No reason why they would be lacking in bone density. Heck if you ate a dozen eggs and a gallon of milk everyday you'd still be considered a lacto-ovo vegetarian and you'd have some serious bone mass.
