What's the deal with the vegan symbol on facebook?

Answered on September 12, 2014

ok, do you know how vegans on facebook have the little circle with a v inside of it next to their name? yeah well it's really annoying.. plus at my gym there are a lot of vegans who i'm friends with and i'd like to give them a little good natured ribbing by having a paleo symbol next to my name! How do i do it? Either a P inside of a circle or some other cool paleo symbol next to my name. I tried shrinking and pasting Mark sisson's Grok pic next to my name but that didn't work. Help!

You know, you're pretty much right. Except for the first paragraph. Tell the vegans to send better typists over to paleohacks!

I agree. Vegan food never causes cruelty to animals. My food is cruelty free. No animals ever die in the production of fruits, vegetables, or those proteiny things, well...except for when they till up the fields or apply rodenticide...but nevermind. Seaworms are not popular animals. But they’re sentient, intelligent creatures, and should not be experimented on, if it causes them suffering, even if it would cure all the cancer in the world. We clearly have to eat a diet that would be applicable to all humans and not differ at all, which is one rich in soylent green, a sustainable soy product.

I couldn't find the description block so I edited Philosophy religion: Eat meat, desription: ℗ = Primal / Paleo / PaNu / Pastoral Politics: the more the better Description: When it's good it's good, when it's not it's not. It's that simple. Get enough of a good thing, avoid the rest. I don't think anyone ever sees this philosophy thing though

Wow that is so daring and straight forward. I am thinking about posting it on my facebook page (when I finish fermenting all those pickles and ginger and studying about alternative sweeteners- then I'll be ninety) and maybe there will be no more cows...because the vegans will have had them all substituted with some sustainable yet-genetically modified source of "poo"

If you are good at computer art, you can draw it or get someone else to do it for you. Otherwise, look for either free or for sale graphics or clipart on the net. For instance here is a nice dead cow: http://www.clipartof.com/details/clipart/12934.html If you want to shrink the symbol small, you will need to look for more simple clearer designs though. For small stuff, better to look like very simple cartoon characters.

At the pet store, they often have toys that are made to look like bones, steaks, fried chicken legs, etc. YOu could buy some of those and decorate your gym bag with them. At the bead store, they will probably have bone beads and wood beads. Some are shaped to look like skulls. Pieces of bone from a horses tails look very similar to finger bones and are quite tribal looking when strung into a necklace. They might also have claws, coyote teeth, etc, that can be strung onto a necklace or a keyfob.

For graphic design, a bow and arrow design might be a good paleo symbol. However, if your goal is to really needle your friends, maybe a picture of a dead cow with legs sticking straight up and Xs where the eyes go might work better. For added emphasis, you could have a fork and knife hovering over the cow. ;-P -Eva

If I ever thought it was a good idea to tie my self-schema to an ideology about what I do NOT do, I couldn't live with my own pretentiousness. Paleo included, since it is essentially the lack of a bunch of things. All things are naturally permitted, then we have to decide which things we would be better off without. To go around wearing our lack of a thing as a badge of honor loses sight of what we ought to be striving to do in the first place: do (and do well without complacency).

I suppose striving for health is a positive and not a negative, but even then it just weirds me out. We are defined by our actions, not by our little symbols and associative concepts. Such ideological symbolism is the refuge of the weak of character. Instead of calling ourselves "paleos", how about we just tackle every point individually as if it should stand or fall by its own merits. Why are grains bad for you? If there is a good reason then we should cease to eat grains, and if someone wants to label that as a particular dietary orientation then so be it, it is a useful rhetorical device for Wolf and Devany, but for our purposes it is at best useless and at worst confining.

How about a slogan to shout? Vegans have plenty of those. Would "Knock off the horns and throw it on the grill!" work?

Just you wasting your time in general to talk about vegans that have a symbol with their name proves the fact that you don't have lives. Us"vegans" are weird because we don't believe in torturing ANY living being, but you all are not weird because you like to waste your time talking about other people beliefs? Oh, and yes please show us "vegans" how cool you are by spending tons of money on products to wear of bones, hair and other animal products and clothing that has another once living, feeling creature that was tortured for no other purpose but greed and stupidity and by spending tons of your time going around and buying these blood covered products..that will teach us "vegans"! And, why does it bother you anyway?? The more people that go vegan mean the more pus, blood, urine, anus, vomit, etc, etc, etc that you "cool" people get to have...Oh, and have a great day!!
