So Oprah did a special on being Vegan. Can any good come of this?

I know, wishful thinking on my part! I wish she would try it for a month and give an honest report. One week isn't going to give her much of an idea of the reality of eating that way.

Exactly, MikeD. I can see them wanting to levy a "meat tax". People like that just plain scare me because they can't seem to refrain from trying to impose their beliefs on everyone else.

Ain't that the truth! It was the constant weakness and sickness on my vegetarian diet that drove me to the arms of Paleo. :)

But that's our POV from the "outside" as it were. The problem is that a lot of her followers (and I used that word deliberately) are almost fanatical and will do most ANYTHING she does or approves. It doesn't matter to them about the yo-yo weight loss or different diets that she has been thru. To use an old cliche, if Oprah says jump, they all just say "how high".

it's when those people all get together and legislate to make eating meat really expensive like they did with cigarettes that's the problem.

On the upside, teaching people to get away from the SAD diet is a good thing. On the downside, teaching them that animal consumption is utterly ethically wrong is problematic.

Further upside: I was thrilled that this video was linked below. http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Good-Food-Video hurrah for Joel Salatin

but this video is a better view of Polyface farm. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIbXU5iR2P4

So many of the Evolutionary Eating folk that I know tried vegetarianism or veganism along the way, perhaps veganism is the 'gateway' drug away from SAD and towards Paleo?!?

Once your mind is open to trying new things, it is hard to shut it again.

Maybe she'll start feeling terrible then have to explain how her health suffered as a result of her Vegan ways. Yes, and then switch to Paleo.

It takes one extreme to propel you to the other. So many paleos used to be vegan, vegetarian or raw foodists. The willingness to experiment with diets is admirable.

From a completely selfish point of view; because Oprah seems to have so much power, this could get people even more scared of meat, paving the way for lower meat prices for us all!

"Tomorrow morning I can wake up and eat an egg and I am so, so, so excited." From the video

I guess it could get people eating more real foods. That would be nice.
