Is Bill Clinton more of a liability than an asset to Veganism?

Answered on August 19, 2014

Do you think many people will go vegan as a result of Bill Clinton stepping out into the limelight with it? I remember a blurb I read on Kent Rieske's site about Clinton's health scare a while back when he had to undergo emergency open heart quadruple bypass surgery.

It sounds as if he is headed in the wrong direction. (specifically going vegan as opposed to vegetarian)

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/bill-clinton-poster-child-plant-based-diet-195630850.html

We have some threads that discuss celebrities and Paleo, but do you think having Bill Clinton as the new poster boy for a Vegan lifestyle could turn out to be a liability for veganism?

Clinton has had roasacea for many, many years. He suffers from the classic " WC Fields" nose (rhinophyma or phymatous rosacea) which more men than women with roasacea suffer from. He has been RED and had rhinophyma for many years, to varying degrees.

At least Clinton has charisma, is intelligent and well-traveled. Glenn Beck made a big stink out of his going vegan back in spring, yet he didn't even last a full month.

I would think this would be more of a liability for Paleo not veganism, since now all of the vegans are going to come pouring out of the cracks with their self-righteous finger-wagging "I told you meat was sooooo bad for you! Now even the President is eating HEALTHY!" hurr durr

Nah -- if anything, it will help bring veganism more mainstream. Most people still like Bill Clinton, actually. I still miss him.

But I am intrigued by how so many intelligent people still fall prey to the myth that the only way to live a truly and thoroughly healthy life is to forgo all animal food sources. Also, didn't veganism begin as more of a lifestyle/philosophy? (I don't know -- I'm really asking.) If it did, it's interesting how it morphed into this extreme health approach.

Maybe we should start positioning Paleo as being an organized patriotic effort intended as an economic stimulus...

I understand that he is aging....one of those things only lucky people get to do, but his skin was all red and flaky, huge bags under his eyes. He has a brain damage, according to Dr. McDougall, from the heart bypass he underwent. According to McDougall, one of the best-kept secrets in medicine is the brain damage caused during heart bypass surgery, better known as "post-bypass surgery cognitive dysfunction."

http://www.drmcdougall.com/bill_clintons_madness.htm

Interesting, huh. McDougall also blames Clinton's heart problems on Barry Sears's Zone Diet which Clinton adopted, after tiring of the Ornish regimen he was originally prescribed by his doctors. Apparently, he's now back with Ornish. Whatever caused his angioplasty and atherosclerosis, I do agree with McDougall that the procedure is completely unnecessary. But then this is how hospitals and heart surgeons make money, by scaring patients that their arteries are clogged up, when 90% of all heart attacks occur due to blood clots (thrombosis) induced by inflammation. How will an angioplasty help when you do not know the locus of the next lightning strike?

Dark circles around vegans' eyes (like those of Clinton, the guy who plays Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds, most East Asian vegans I know, and me before I became a born again carnivore) are likely "allergic shiners" related to excess grain consumption.

i don't get it. just because i mention bill clinton does not make it political in any way. i'm talking about his popularity and his health history and his health future. the public views vegan as the opposite of paleo. many vegans view vegan as the opposite of paleo. (even though it's really not exactly, but close in some ways I suppose)

@sherpamelissa & patrik... guys... i pointed out that this seems more overtly political than many posts that had been shut down. if that's going to get me booted, or if that counts as negative & overly dramatic, i don't know what to say. i'm re-reading my comment, and my comment back to jack, and i certainly don't see this as overly dramatic, though maybe it's negative. i don't have a problem with PH. i don't intend to start my own site. patrik, this is your site & i think you do a great job. if i'm really ruining the fun, you can boot me. i think it's unnecessary.

If Bill keels over from the diet, this thread will come back to life immediately. :)
