Swirly Urine + Shadows

Answered on August 19, 2014

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking for a while and can't seem to find a thread addressing my issue. Ever since starting paleo, I have what appears to be "swirls" in my urine. I can see the shadows dancing (almost gracefully) at the bottom of the toilet bowl. Needless to say, I am finding the whole thing a little disconcerting.

FYI, I would describe my diet as high fat (from grass fed beef + lamb), moderate carb and moderate protein. It's been working really well for me (slow but steady weight loss, really good for my skin, hair and mood).

Any ideas as to what the swirls might indicate?

Thanks!

Let's go with house-cleaning for now but I am definitely going to talk to my doctor about a urinalysis, just to satisfy my burning curiosity :)

Looks like smoke swirls from the pictures adam. Are you sure you want to fix this? Its like a hidden talent that makes peeing fun.

It's definitely not cloudy, just delightfully swirly. See pictures above provided by Adam. I don't take DIM and tend to stay away from cruciferous veggies for the most part (with the exception of broccoli, steamed and drenched in olive oil *drooling*).

@ Ambimorph, haha, I nearly spat out my tea :) Urine Lava Lamps, there has to be a market for that, I'm sure of it.

@ Adam: Yes!!! I do see a similar swirling pattern! Thank you. You're right, shocking as it appears, the patterns are immensely pretty.

Thanks guys, based on my google search, I was also leaning towards ketosis but doubted it based on the sheer volume of carby salads I've been eating (up to 15 tomatoes a day, carrots, bell peppers etc). I'm not in ketosis denial, just really surprised (pleasantly).

"almost gracefully." That has got to be one of the funniest things I have ever read on PH. Lololol. *Hope you get a helpful answer!

Yes, it's ketones and fat. It happens to some people (like myself) when in ketosis. I've inquired about it with my endocrinologist who did some test on it and everything came back a-okay, but yeah, it's a weird side effect for some of us.

It's not the urine that's doing the dancing..I honestly don't know how else to describe it. It's almost as though there is a mix of oil and water in there, except the oil isn't suspended in droplets, but rather floats around in a "swirl" shape...Any thoughts?? I did an online search and there were mentions of ketosis, but considering the amount of carbs I eat in the form of veggies and small amounts of fruit, it seems highly unlikely.

...elaborate on "swirls," please. I'm at a loss as to what to say because generally urine doesn't dance gracefully.

The only thing I can possibly think of is that this is a sign that you're excreting quite a bit of ketones. As long as you don't have a urinary tract infection or something, I think that's the most likely explanation.

You have been running small experiments on Turbulent Mixing at home when you add liquids of two different densities together.

I think what you are seeing is kinematic stirring, and is likely to be pretty.

Some definitions and pictures can be found in: http://www.its.caltech.edu/~pxdgroup/pub/93/dimotakis.93a.pdf

I don't think that much dietary data can be ascertained from the shadows cast by the denser liquid.

Can you see a similar swirling pattern in http://www.google.com/search?q=turbulent+mixing ??

Here is an old video course on Fluid Dynamics, if you want a overview... http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0EC6527BE871ABA3&feature=plcp

You could also be shedding heavy metals. Easy enough to get a urinalysis, if you really want to know what's in there. One analysis they do is called specific gravity and it measures urine density.

Many, many years ago, I had a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. There was a popular treatment just gaining ground (now it's a protocol with its own website and everything) of treating with guaifenesin (main ingredient in cough syrup). When it's taken in high doses, it causes excretion of phosphates (and we all know how high the SAD is in phosphates). I'm assuming phosphates are heavier than the normal stuff in urine. So I could imagine you could be excreting all kinds of excess stuff. Including ketones.

So, if you're eating clean, your body could be house-cleaning. :D

By some chance are you taking DIM? Or possibly eating tons of cruciferous veggies? This tends to color urine slightly orange, and can create those swirls.

If you're not properly processing protein, it can show us a cloudy urine, not sure if it would cause swirls.
