[META] Recently it has been too much trolling. Suggestions please!

What is the best way to make people stop trolling?

Not feeding them? Ignoring them? Any anti-trolling advice?

Yea dude, vegans don't think straight, trolling and hating on them will just make them feel like they're fighting a worthy cause. Let them destroy their own health, that's good enough revenge for me. I think to really solve this problem though we sould just make a 100 rep minimum to ask a question, boom, problem solved.

vb, If you just send 19.99 to 123 mainstreet, atlanta ga, 30303 apt #697 they'll send you a brochure all about it. Make the check payable to Stephen R. also. Seriously though, I don't think you're actually supposed to do the 500 point featured question just to give points to special people, but to make a featured question just ask a regular question, wait 48 hours without picking a best answer then click 'Start a Bounty' and allocate however many points you want to give to that question 50-500; When you pick a best answer the bounty (100-550 points) will go to that person.

I think your explanation is flawed. When I get outraged about some post it is not because somebody is supporting/opposing the idea. It is because I reject the moron behind it who is wasting my time on reading something completely stupid. My line of thought, "How low of a person are you if you bother to write this post in order to amuse yourself?" So basically I reject the troll himself (the person behind trolling) rather than the act of trolling. I don't find trolling either hilarious or intelligent. I think it is dumb and annoying.

The only real ammunition we have is the question, "Are you a troll?"

Why?

I think this is, in part, an attempt at collecting quotes- you know, the sort of quotes that make us look bad and can be posted in various places as an example of why we are crazy.

Now, yes, I realize if a newbie is really a newbie and not a troll, it isn't really fun to be called a troll. Maybe we should add a brief explanation and a preemptive apology.

I also understand some will just think we are a different kind of crazy- paranoid- unless they start reading all the troll questions. Maybe we need to keep a list. Or post them somewhere.

However, pointing out the trollish nature of various questions lowers the possibility of any of our quotes being used against us. Sure, I have written stuff easily taken out of context, and no doubt have written plain foolish things, but this would require searching, and reading of many, many questions. Hence, that is why they ask leading questions. They are trying to get a response they can link back to. If the trolling question is in the original text, then the value of the link goes down. Then they'll either give up, or they'll have to do more work. If they are getting paid, well, they'll just have to do the work.

They'll never stop, it will only get worse. Our only hope is to combine forces and launch a massive front on almost every other site. Starting with the vegan boards.

Denial of Service Attacks work great but if we truly want to be successful we have to destroy them completely. To achieve this objective we need insiders.

Do we have anyone in Australia who can get in close with Durriander?

Maybe 2 others to get in close with Graham and Dean Ornish. This is going to be hard work guys, but with some elbow grease and a lot of bacon we can do this, not for us... But for the world.

Who's with me?!?

(lol)

I think most folks troll to induce responses and get a reaction. If they are clearly trolling shutting down the thread eliminates this and puts a pin in their balloon.

Sometimes I see a question and I have to really consider if it's a troll or a stupid person. They're fairly similar sometimes. The best response is to flag the troll post and move on. There's too much BS in life to let some anonymous text on the internet get your panties in a bunch. We've got better things to do...like debate about the evils of butter that still contains the dairy.

The solution is easy trolls and spammers get one warning and then their ip is blocked. To do this you also have to prevent access to anyone using public privacy proxies.

To do so you need to empower the users or get more mods.

I think most of it is harmless and kind of funny unless people get ugly. It bothers me a little that I can't tell sometimes if it's a serious question or not. I find myself checking previous answers/questions more often now. There are a few people on this site that have some rep built up and just like to mess with folks, kind of a shame.

I actually didn't know you could flag questions so I'll definitely be doing so from now on. I think, like you said just to ignore would be the best route.

Seconded. Or make it moderated until 50.

It's apparently the same guy, so perhaps the restrictions might be localized in ways.

And also maybe concerns the anorexic who posts nearly the same question every day (who I don't consider a troll, but it would be nice if he/she could keep to one account...)

Too many users on PaleoHacks confuse "trolling" with "bullying". Yes, trolling also provokes a reaction, but it is most definitely humorous, taking advantage of the simple-minded who cannot differentiate posts which are outright ludicrous and those which are legitimate.

For example, going on a PETA forum and stating how we need to slaughter more animals on a regular basis for fun would most obviously be an outright absurd notion; nonetheless, there are those who would be enraged by such a statement. Those with even a modicum of intelligence can laugh while the fools rage.

While I agree that trolling has its own purpose, I do not agree with bullying. Bullying or as to call out particular people as to instigate a caustic reaction does not belong on PaleoHacks. It most certainly is unfunny and hurtful in contrast to trolling which does not call out particular people and is most often hilarious to even the somewhat intelligent.
