Traveling to Holland and Iceland - Does anyone have any suggestions for traditional foods to try or fun things to do?

Hi all, I'll be traveling to Rotterdam, Netherlands (and around South/Zuid Holland in general) and Reykjavik, Iceland at the end of the summer and would love to hear about any suggestions for traditional/local/possibly Dutch or Icelandic paleo foods and dishes I should try. I'm really interested in learning about authentic local foods. It'd be great if it's something that's part of normal meals or part of a special tradition.

Any other tips on fun things to do or restaurants to visit are also greatly appreciated!

I've heard about the bollens before and even as a paleoish person, I have to admit they sound kinda tasty, but I'll resist that and the cheese :D No cigarettes for me - Don't think they're paleo anyway :D

Hmmm do I take the cod liver oil like a straight shot? Or can it be drizzled? I'm not into the super fishy taste :X

Ah, I'm always interested in Chinese or Asian people in places I least expect. Like in the states whenever I hear of Asians living in a non-coastal state it shocks me for some reason :X Thanks for all the advice!

Oh, and no Chinatown, unfortunately, but there are a few Asian markets.

Oh, yes I forgot the cod liver. Foie gras of the sea. It's ofte possible to get it free from a fishmonger, or you can buy it canned, both smoked and not.

The lamb's head sounds really interesting, but I don't know if I have the guts (ha!) to do it lol I really love how international Paleo is!

In Reykjavik you should strive to drink the tap water. The bottled still water is *exactly the same*, only put on bottles. You'd basically be paying 150 ISK for the bottle. And yes, second puffins and other sea birds.

Went to Iceland last summer, I agree, lamb, whale - delicious. Lots of great soups. Shots of cod liver oil with the hotel breakfasts (stayed at the Hilton). Brought home smoked lamb and some cheeses, not an issue with US customs. Puffin is on the menu but I was on my way to the airport so didn't get to try it. We rented vespas and drove along the bike paths. The water there, even the tap water is delicious. Have a great trip.

Wow thanks for all the tips! I've definitely not tried a lot of these foods and I'm sure being raised as a semi squeemish American doesn't help...thankfully my Asian parents always pushed me to eat traditional foods, hopefully that'll make me a bit braver with trying some of these foods. BTW are there any Chinatowns in Reykjavik? I like visiting local Chinatown-like areas whenever I travel :D Thanks!

I actualy love gravlax! I had no idea it was fermented though. I had some at a Swedish party and thought it was amazing.

I'm from Amsterdam....

I recommend you try to eat salted or soused herring. You can also pick another one of our cold water fish. Or seafood like Northsea shrimp, clams and stuff...

Shop for groceries at a "Natuurwinkel". It's sorta like Wholefoods.

We also have great lamb from an isle in the Northsea. Texel is the name of the island and famous for it's lamb meat.

There are also ocasional farmers markets where you can by meat and fish, and veggies and fruit.

And if you fall of the paleo wagon I recommend you to have a typical Dutch treat like Stroopwafels, Advocaat or our famous Cheese....

Try fresh cod liver, you will be suprised how much it does not taste like cod liver oil. Try lambs heads. Try all the guts you can find ;) I would :)

I'm from Iceland, and here's my two cents.

Eat some lamb. Lambs in Iceland stays out in the mountains from the moment they are born and until they are slaughtered. If you are travelling to Breidafjordur, you can get an island mutton or lamb. The sheep there live their entire lives on the islands, and supplement grass, wild flowers etc with sea weed! It's extremely good meat.

Hangikjot, or smoked lamb. Traditionally it is eaten in winter but available year round.

Eat whale, if you have no moral qualms (and you shouldn't, they are not endangered, and they are about as stupid as cows). I prefer it as sashimi, though it is not traditional.

Eat a horse filet, it is delicious, it is always pastured.

Eat lots of fish! The local way of eating fish used to be haddock, potatoes and butter 2 times a week at least and fish pie with "boiled" rye bread (plokkfiskur me?? seyddu r??gbrau??i) following the fish eating days. Ulfar at thrir frakkar (3frakkar.com) makes a stunning plokkfiskur, but it will probably include some wheat and the rye bread is obviously not paleo.

Dried fish, or hardfiskur is an Icelandic speciality. It is eaten with butter. You can buy it in most supermarkets, but it's expensive per kg cause it's dense! Dried seaweed (or s??l) is also very traditional.

What I think of the most traditional food is whey-soured meat, putrid shark, singed sheeps heads and sl??tur (a bit like haggish) eaten with turnip mash (or for the last couple of hundred years, swede mash and possibly potatoes). The sheeps heads and soured food is paleo. Try to eat the eyes as they contain lots of zinc and they taste awesome! Sl??tur usually contains rye. Unfortunately this food is usually only available in restaurants in february, but you can get sheeps heads on a platter at the bus depot, and you can buy the sour stuff, including sour whale blubber and putrid shark in Noatun supermarkets or at the weekend market at Kolaportid downtown Reykjavik.

Skyr is an icelandic dairy speciality. It's a yogurt like thing made from whey. Quite sour but delicious with cream and blueberries. Available in any supermarket.

If you want to eat at restaurants, I recommend Einar Ben and Thrir frakkar for "Icelandic" cuisine. Thrir frakkar is more authentically Icelandic, but I prefer Einar Ben. Beware though, that I find Icelandic restaurants in general extremely sloppy about gluten, allergens etc, so even if you ask them to exlude gluten containg parts of dishes , they might serve some to you anyway unknowingly.

In Holland eat plenty of ollie-bollen (deep fried donuts), nasi and bami bollen (deep fried, breaded rice and noodles), friets met pinda sause (french fries covered in peanut butter), and frikendels (mystery meat, breaded and deep fried). Then smoke a hand-rolled shaggy cigarette, put on some wooden shoes and ride a bike all day--Hey, it works for them!

If you want to go paleo, you can find some great chow in the many Indonesian restaurants, ask for the "Rijstafel" literally 'rice table', it is like a dozen sampler plates of good indonesian food, not just rice.

Look for little fish stands near the sea, try one of everything they sell. Mussells are a specialty and in every restaurant. They do herring very well, too.

Try Gravlax if you get the chance, think of it like fermented smoked salmon. It is actually cured in salt and spices. If you are not a fish person I dont reccomend it though
