Hacks for checking-in oils?

Answered on August 19, 2014

So I'm traveling to HK in a week. I'll be there for nearly two months, so just to be safe I'm bringing all my oils and supplements with me. Some of the bottles I'm bringing will be open (as in not sealed). When my boyfriend made the trip 6 months ago, he arrived to find cod liver oil had leaked, all his things were soaked and he had to replace all his clothes. Oil is... difficult, to say the least.

Now, short of wrapping the bottles in metres and metres of cling-film and dipping it in wax (inspired by bullets of hash), does anyone know of a better and perhaps less wasteful way of ensuring the oil stays in the bottle, and doesn't find my undies?

So simple! I should've thought of this too, as this is what you do when you make herbal extracts, so the liquid doesn't touch the metal cap. It's so simple it just might work! Will probably do zip-locks as well. Thank you!

I know, I'm sure there IS the stuff I need, but I'm worried about little ingredients like that. I'm with you on the drooling. It'll be so hard not to go to my favourite places.. Don't forget the pork! The Chinese have pork DOWN. :)

I think homeland security only applies when I get back in, and by that point (hopefully) I'll have finished most of it. HK has pretty much no customs.. I'm unsure as to whether or not I'll be able to find stuff that's as high quality as the stuff I can find here - remember my prohibitive fussiness? This is a far less stressful way for me, if you can believe it. But hey man, don't hold back on your hard time giving just because we're homies!

Can you do this with cling-film? Maybe a couple layers melted down?

Cod liver, evening primrose, coconut oil and red palm oil (but those two aren't so bad as long as they stay solid - in luggage compartments it's pretty cold.

I traveled with loads of coconut oil recently. The trick is to use plastic food cling wrap. Unscrew the bottle, use enough wrap so that it covers the mouth and the sides of the screwy part. Then screw back the top. Guaranteed to seal it from spilling and it doesn't look suspicious because it's hidden under the cap.

Make sure you buy some package tape, seriously strong stuff, and seal each bottle individually. You'd be surprised how they come open. (just pass it from one side across the top and to the other side. otherwise its alot of work getting the tape off)

I also then put them in zip locks, should be ok.

In HK you can find LOADS of great stuff, lot of imports too!! But watch out for the soy!!

oh the dumplings.....ok, practically drooling now!!

On things like CLO and evening primrose oil you could use capsules instead of the liquid.

I know when oil is shipped to me they usually tape around the cap then double bag in zip lock bags. That's what I would do if in your shoes.

I have not tried this flying, but when traveling I will sometimes by heat shrink film (it is often used to wrap giftbags) and use it to seal stuff I don't want to leak. It does take some heat, but a hairdryer does it.

Since Mei-ling is my homie, I won't give her as hard a time about this as I would you others. However, why do you want to do this (and risk getting stopped by Homeland Security, on top of it all)? Just use butter while you are there or boil stuff.
