Exam Week & Starting Paleo

Answered on August 19, 2014

I have been so excited to start this new lifestyle, but I am tired. SO SO SO SO tired. And it's exam week. I haven't skimped on carbs, I even had a banana today to lift my spirits. All to no avail.

What could I do/eat to escape this lethargy attack? Unfortunately, sleep is not an option as I have an exam and two papers due tomorrow.

All advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

it is too early if the added stress makes it impossible to stick to it and ultimately you fail.

I was wondering if that may be the case. I just finished eating another yummy meal, so hopefully this will help me. Thanks!

I actually considered this, but I would like to keep this option as a last resort if all else fails. It's never too early to be healthy :)

If I were you, I'd wait a week until exams are over. No reason to put extra stress on your system at this time.

Honestly, quit stressing over the carbs! If you were not low-carb before going Paleo, this is not the time to start. One banana is not "high carb". Eat all the bananas, sweet potatoes, apples, pears, etc. that you want and wait until after your exams are over to lower your carb intake. Exam time is not when you want the low carb flu, with its brain fog and sluggishness.

It actually doesn't sound like you are currently eating very many naturally starchy foods - like potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash, carrots, etc. Those are all excellent carb choices to help prevent the "low carb flu" and ease symptoms of initial wheat withdrawal (thus making it through exam week a much easier task). Also be sure to eat plenty of fat! If you find potatoes aren't enough, rice is also considered a "safe" (easily digestible) starch.

Up calories through fat and/or carb intake, optimise sleep, drink plenty of fluids and use coffee where necessary.

Eat more carbs from potatoes and sweet potatoes. Might be missing carbs or calories for energy.

After exams, experiment more with amounts that work the best for you, but for now be well fed.

Also, I'd suggest making sure you're getting enough calories. The majority of the standard diet's calories come from grains, so maybe you just need some more fuel!
