Dude, where's my Energy?

Answered on September 12, 2014

Reaching 2 months on Paleo, I'm still wasted most of the time. Some days better, some days worse. About two weeks ago I had a massive carb-flu that passed and I felt great for several days afterwards, but it didn't last. While writing this post, I can barely keep my eyes open, and it's like that since noon. Even in days I do have some energy, it still feels similarly to how it was before going Paleo; I don't feel any difference cognitively-wise, besides being more tired than before on average.

Using FitDay to track my eating patterns, it seems that overall I'm getting what I need. Besides the usual low calcium/magnesium/potassium/vit E, almost everything exceeds the RDA. For Cal/Mag I take eggshell calcium/bone broth/green leafy veg/Mag supp in addition. My calorie ratio is around 70/25/5 (fat/protein/carbs). I eat enough, and eat good. I'm very strict.

What I usually eat: 3 big meals based on meat/fish, 1/2 avocado, 2tsp coconut oil, 40g butter (got a feeling it's too much), veggies (mostly green leafy ones, peppers), nuts (almonds/walnuts/macademia). bone broth, eggs inconsistently when short on meat/fish (they make me even more lethargic), etc'.

That's what I consumed yesterday: Calories 2069, Fat 165.5, Carbs 23.6, Protein 125.6. I'm about 70kg @ 1.82.

Other info:

  • Each morning for the past 18 days starts by 20min of Oil Pulling followed by supplementing with GP's FCLO/Butter Oil blend for teeth remineralization (that's mainly the reason for the cal/mag tweaks mentioned above).

  • Besides some push-ups, I didn't get into real exercising yet. I'm planning on getting back to it this week (got a feeling this may have something to do with my condition).

  • I developed this weird shape in my lower abdomen when I muscle up. It has a sort of flat shape, while the middle part is getting "sucked" inside, and the two sides of it are emphasized and are really soft to touch. I'm also constipating for atleast 2 weeks now,. No idea what causes it, but I believe what's causing it is related to my energy issue.

  • I don't eat any fruits.

  • I'm doing VLC mostly to let my body adjust to using fat. Dunno if I'm adapted yet or not.

Would really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!

If that was your thyroid to blame, then the carbs should help in the next few days. Keep eating around that amount of NET carbs. But if that's not thyroid, then I'd go for CoQ10 Ubiquinol supplement (not Ubiquinone), which is able to recharge your mitochondria and give you energy. How's your D3 levels? Do you eat oysters? Offal? I'd also go for some home-made water kefir.

Thanks everyone for the great comments! As for carbs, I'm really confused. One school of thought is that you don't even -need- carbs, that your body should be able to use fat much better. I read in so many places about people going VLC and feeling awesome. Guess that's not entirely true in a general sense for anyone? Anyhow, I started upping my carbs last night. Will continue doing so for the next few days to see how I feel.

Also, "sleep when you're tired" is good advice for people who are basically healthy. But there are lots of conditions that can make you lethargic no matter how much you sleep, or where you need hours more sleep than you normally would. There are even some conditions (like depression and bipolar) where sleeping as much as you want can make things worse.

er, lots of people here are on ketogenic diets. the usual reasons are fat loss or combatting insulin resistance, among others.

This is worth a shot. Find out if going up to, say, 50g of carbs a day makes you feel better. At least then you'll know. That might not even be enough to knock you out of ketosis.

EAT MOAR CARBZZZZ. Seriously, you don't need to go VLC to become fat-adapted. I don't even think you're going VLC. You're VVVVVVLC (very very very very very very low carb). Paleo does not equal anti-carb. Sweet potatoes are not Satan. Eat them. And bananas and plantains and starchy vegetables to your heart's desire. Still eat beef hearts and other offal and meat and fat to your heart's desire, too. One more thing: feel free to nap. It's along the same lines as eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full: sleep when you're tired and don't when you're not.

Carbs can really be your best friend and you can still lose weight eating them! VLC made me feel exactly like you describe and it didn't get better until I added back fruit and starch.

Sleep Sleep Sleep. Hows your sleep?

Blue Light exposure before bed. Natural Vitamin D exposure during the day?

There is a good chance one of the many foods youre taking in, don't agree with you. try super simplifying what youre eating and then slowly reintroducing them.

Eggs, Nuts, Peppers are potential allergy issues. Other listed items less so, but still possible. cull those 3 for a short while and see how you feel.

and no, you really cant overdo quality butter. Ive eaten half a pound in one sitting, and felt great, and have done it many times since, its like Rocket Fuel.

I agree with cavebitch, up your carbs! I went LC but allowed some fruit and even then I had to deal with lethargy, constipation and fogginess.

The minute I allowed some sweet potato in and maybe a little white rice, BAM!

The fat loss continued, energy sky-rocketed, sex drive etc...

No need to eliminate carbs the way you did my friend. It is not necessary unless a doctor is treating you for seizures or something like that.

It could be your not properly digesting your fat, try some bitters before your meals to help break down those fats, and maybe something to help acidify the stomach like apple cider vinegar or raw sauerkraut with your meals.

What type of work do you do? I work a relatively physical job and find that I need at least 80g of carbohydrate in my diet or I'm not a pleasant person.

Update:

Significant increase of carbs (sweet potatoes, rice, squash etc') over the past 5 days (yesterday's count was ~130g), symptoms hasn't changed. I also eliminated nuts in this time period, and stopped taking the magnesium supplement for 2 days now just in case.

This is really frustrating.

After adding the carbs, following my food intake, it really doesn't seem like I miss anything; surely not significant enough to make me feel this way.

Any other ideas before I unwillingly cut out also my mentioned morning routine?

Chaeil, go eat a bowl of dicks. Hey Vanilla, guess what? EAT CARBS. Safe starches are great. White potatoes, sweet potatoes, squashes, pumpkin. Eat em and enjoy em.

LMFAO. "Car flu"? It's the meat poisoning you. It goes away because the body is remarkably adapt at adjusting. But don't kid yourself, too much meat= death.
