If the thyroid tests say you don't have a problem, is it possible that you still do? What tests are essential to ask for if you suspect there is a problem?

Keep in mind that it's not only about getting the proper tests done, it's about going to a practitioner who can read them correctly. The typical reference ranges used in practices/by labs is abysmal. I've been hypothyroid for YEARS but couldn't find a doctor to diagnose it until recently because all of the practitioners I saw were using outdated numbers.

I ran out of room above...So the essential tests to ask for are, TSH, Free T4, Free T3, antibodies and if at all possible but harder to get ordered the Reverse T3.

The simple answer is yes. The typical test that is done is the TSH...thyroid stimulating hormone. This comes from the pituitary and doesn't actually measure any of the thyroid hormones. Also the normal range for this test is too wide and misses a lot of people who have symptoms but are told they are normal. I had symptoms for ten years and was tested 3 times and told I was normal. Later after I had learned some things about thyroid I asked for copies of my old labs and found that I had been in the normal range but was on 100th of a percent within that range.
