Need help with a thyroid cyst issue

Is there, possibly, a Paleo solution to cysts on the thyroid? They've been noted in two ultra sounds of my throat. My doctor has said their stance is that they don't do anything about them. My problem is that they seem to restrict my ability to swallow at times, and besides, it's just scary thinking of cysts in my body, especially on the thyroid gland.

I've followed Paleo diet for a bit less than two years now. My only cheat would be wine semi-regularly.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I admittedly don't know as much about cysts, as my experiences is specifically with nodules, but I think you are wise to avoid gluten and dairy, regardless. I have heard that cysts can occasionally even collapse and basically disappear when the fine needle aspiration is done. That is strictly anecdotal though. If you feel it is impacting your quality of life, however, I would talk to some different doctors (not knowing what your insurance coverage is, or even what country you are in, as I know this can have an impact on this capability). Are you thyroid levels themselves normal?

Thanks, Megan. This is all helpful. This has been an ongoing issue for about 4 years. I am told they are cysts, and intermittently they do affect me physically for sure. I'm with you on the gluten and dairy. Haven't intentionally touched either in years. Thanks again.

Do you know if they are cysts or nodules? Having nodules on your thyroid is actually very, very common. There are two main concerns...1- are they benign 2-does their position harm you in any way (swallowing, breathing, etc.).

To the first one, the vast majority of thyroid nodules are benign. So it is not likely that you have a malignancy, but even if you did, thyroid cancers are usually highly treatable. There are signs on an ultrasound that may point to the possibility of further investigation. You can have several tests to help determine the possibility of malignancy, including radioactive iodine uptake u/s and a fine needle aspiration (biopsy). Has you doctor mentioned either of these?

To the second one, nodules can bother you physically if they impinge on your esophagus, your trachea, etc. Sounds like yours may be impacting you? Have you mentioned this to your doc?

As far as paleo is concerned, I think that first and foremost I would avoid gluten like the plague. The vast majority of thyroid issues in developed countries are from autoimmune issues. So there's a good chance your nodules/cysts developed due to something like Hashimoto's disease. Avoiding gluten would be the number one recommendation here, I think. Avoiding dairy may also be prudent, as it can also cause inflammation. Other than that, you may also consider limiting your intake of raw goitrogens. Google for more info...basically there are some foods, particularly some veggies that may worsen thyroid inflammation in those susceptible. There's varying opinions on how much these really matter, but cooking the foods is supposed to greatly lessen the effect, so if you currently eat a lot of raw veggies in this category, you might want to look into it.

I've had multiple nodules on my thyroid since I was around 16 (45 now). I'm currently on a strict Paleo regimen to try to halt their growth and avoid surgery that's been recommended to me. I have done a lot of research. I'd be happy to answer any questions that I can if you have any.
