Fatherhood and lower T

So this study came out that shows testosterone levels of fathers decreasing, the most among men who spent the longest time with their children.

Is this a biological adaptation and a good thing?

The ny times article also points out a few other studies. Is this correlation and not causation?

Also, the ny times articles says that higher lifetime testosterone levels increase prostate cancer risk, however I am under the impression that high T is generally protective against cancer and heart disease.

Thanks for the link. Basal testosterone is associated with cheating, this is why testosterone increases at a strip club or when meeting a new women - it facilitates promiscuity, I think that talking to a new women would raise testosterone temporarily regardless of basal testosterone. High testosterone would get higher, and low testosterone would get a boost. Of course with regards to the entire issue, I don't think that we need to worry about testosterone as long as we live mindfully, I think you'll agree.

Yeah, I guess I wonder if it's something about fatherhood that lowers T, or it's the lack of other things (weightlifting, looking for sex) that fails to raise T.

T levels and prostate cancer were just studied in the urology literature in a meta analysis. There is not correlation. They did however find that low T is associated with high cardiac risk factors and low HDL

I believe this effect of fatherhood is present in many species across the animal kingdom as a result of the need for less aggression that might turn into infanticide. Similarly, in species where the father performs at least some care of the offspring it likely keeps him more invested in providing assistance. It's clearly not necessary (one would hope) in most cases for humans, but it's not a bad thing either.

It's really bizarre though to imply that maleness is an unhealthy state that causes cancer. The consequences of hypogonadism are documented and severe however, such as sarcopenia, osteoporosis and the cardiovascular issues that Dr. K. mentioned.

I commented on that earlier, there really is no evidence that T levels are associated with prostate cancer. Even though castration is a treatment for prostate cancer, it doesn't follow that more of it causes cancer. There is a huge difference between what enables cancer to grow and what produces cancer in the first place. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19375844

If testosterone levels decrease it is because somehow lower testosterone is better for parenting and monogamy. It is certainly less likely to make you cheat. The father will probably be less focused on sexual conquest and more on fathering children as a pair. It makes sense, since that approach will make it more likely that the child is genetically successful and those genes persist.

There is probably an age appropriate range.. not sure though. Honestly though, the rewards of fatherhood are probably much greater than that bit of T you might otherwise have if you didnt have a kid.

Diet, exercise, sleep, stress probably have a greater effect on T. I am sure there are plenty of paleo and even non-paleo fathers whose T levels are still in great shape thanks to diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep.
