What I have read is that the aluminum is found in the brains of patients that were thought to have Alzheimer's, leading some to believe that the toxicity mimics Alzheimer's.

Does aluminum cause Alzheimers or does it simply collect in amyloid fibrils found in Alzheimers patients?

600-800F is not normal cooking conditions. Heck, the ideal application for teflon pans (i.e. cooking eggs) needs what, 200-250F? C'mon.

It has nothing to do with burning. Teflon forms dangerous toxins under regular cooking conditions.

If you burn teflon, it forms toxic shit. If you burn hydrocarbons, it forms toxic shit. Lesson: burning stuff forms toxic byproducts.

You are welcome to use my share then. Overheating a Teflon pan releases toxins that are dangerous for humans and birds. Heaven only knows what it does to the food after repeated use.

I agree, I avoid it altogether as much as possible. I'd rather them be wrong about Alzheimer's connections and I just didn't use aluminum for no reason, than for the research to be correct and I hadn't bothered to care and used aluminin anyway.

I wouldn't use that at all. The coating and/or aluminum will leach into the food.

I ditched aluminum in all cooking applications when it was found in the brains of what were thought to be sufferers of Alzheimer's disease. It can leach into the food during the cooking process and deposit in the brain. It can also cause kidney damage. I'm not sure what the toxicity level of aluminum combined with Teflon would be.

What coating is on the aluminum to make it non-stick? There's no way pure aluminum will be non-stick on it's own. Or if it is, it's so polished that one use will scratch it enough to not be non-stick.

I agree. I use cast iron, enamel, stainless steel and glass only - and no microwave. The cast iron I just heat up, clear the surface with a spatula and wipe it down. The stainless cleans up great with a scrubby spunge after a soak. For burnt on stuff, you can also boil some water in it then scrape it off. Really tough stuff gets a paste of baking soda and water, but those are rare occasions when I left things on the stove too long. Generally just use plenty of fat and the pots will clean up quickly. No big deal to give up the flaky coated stuff. Plain aluminum is also not the best option.

I don't know. I'll probably never know for sure. What I do know is that switching back to all stainless steel, iron & enameled pans was WAY less painful than I expected...I think I never knew how to properly use "regular" pans to cook without food sticking (and why would I? I had a full set of non-stick pans); now that I know, the extra work involved in cleaning is so minimal as to be not worth thinking about.
