I can't eat raw vegetebles, bad teeth. Help?

Hi All,

My question is, would I lose the benefits if I put my raw vegetables through a VitaMix and drank them? My dental problems mean it literally takes me over an hour just to eat a salad.

Thanks

It is. I have a friend who got me in a tizzy because she said that the chemical structure of the vegetables' fiber is changed by liquification. I think the PHYSICAL structure, maybe, and anyway, isn't that where the benefit of the fiber lies? So, I got into a tizzy about it. Because I need that FIBER! So, raw green smoothies + cooked vegetables is the answer for me, I reckon.

You know, I never knew that. And, I always thought cooking destroyed all the nutrients.

I'm about to do this with a bunch of dandelion greens. Then, chew very patiently, lol.

I know I will have to get my teeth fixed. It has been a long slow process...the dental care I can get with my insurance is suboptimal, and I have a lot of fear and mistrust about putting the decision of whether to get bridges, or pull em all out and get dentures, in someone else's hands. So, I chew with my 12 front remaining teeth. Silly I know! Thanks for the consideration.

@ Nemesis would you rather complain about not having insurance or take charge and fix YOUR OWN problem? Dental treatment is worth what you pay for it. Bad teeth can be fixed but why do you think it is free?

@Sunny, dentures work just fine if properly made. Braces do not hurt. Missing teeth do not hurt. Oral Surgery heals. I am a dentist. What do you do? You get what you pay for. Take charge and fix your own problems. Bad teeth are caused by eating carbohydrates, nothing else.

Not to mention that OP may not have dental insurance, or not be able to afford what the insurance may not cover. Extensive dental work ain't cheap!

How do you know the OP is in pain? How do you know this person doesn't have full dentures, braces, missing teeth, or is recovering from oral surgery? Don't be so quick to judge. I don't think wanting an easier way to eat is that big of an issue.

I have been eating steamed vegetables for over six months now (digestive problems) - I am fine. I prefer them steamed - they taste better!

cooking vegeatables makes vitamins and mineral more accessible, also easier to digest, i don't see why anyone would avoid cooking vegetables

Why don't you just cook them?

If you prefer them raw to cooked, then the Vitamix is the way to go if you can't chew them. I own a Vitamix, awesome machine. Allows you to use all of the fruit/veggie unlike a juicer.

I think that would be fine - but I've heard that you might want to swish the blended veges around in your mouth a little to mix in saliva and get the digestive enzymes flowing.

I'd cook them, but.....

If you can't chew them you'll likely end up with more digestive issues because of that and also because raw veggies are generally harder to digest than cooked ones.

There are some sites that 'cook' raw foods in food dehydrators so they don't loose all the vitamins and minerals that cooking or over cooking can cause, but you'd have to check that out. It might be another way in combo with cooked and blended veggies.

I blanch veggies for a couple of minutes - then immediately put them in ice cold water - they don't lose and colour this way (so presumably not so many nutrients) as they might with boiling...

Why not get your teeth fixed. It is not normal to have pain in your body. That is your body's systems crying out for repair. Palieo will protect you from problems because it works within what is possible in human genetic programing. It CANNOT fix everything that was broken before.

Cooking removes the anti-nutrients, I can't digest any raw veggies.
