Hi!

I'm a heavy drinker of Yerba Mate, and I often eat its stalks. Do you think that this can be good or even bad for health?

Thanks!

Well I'm ambivalent about fibre too... some people think it would be good to get quite high amounts (turning to butyrate etc), others think that any is a net bad (feeding bacteria, anti-nutritious etc).

Well, for now drink it weaker maybe? And quit eating the dang leaves!

So if fibre is not actually beneficial wouldn't that reinforce the idea that eating the leaves is not good?

I know nothing about yerba mate tea, so I googled for information and what I found would lead me to suggest you not eat the leaves any more. Check out http://www.bodybuildingforyou.com/weight-loss-etc/yerba-mate.html for the reasons why.

If I was using yerba mate, and read this article I would certainly do further research to see if in fact there could be a problem with my health.

There's nothing especially harmful about eating the stalks compared to just drinking the tea. I can't resist eating the tea leaves from some pai mu tan, white tea, if I have some.

With mate the thing to worry about (apart from the caffeine) would be its very high tannin content, which has been implicated in throat and gastro-oesophageal cancer. As to any benefits, it would contain even more of the nutrients that mate contains than you drank in the tea, but these would be even harder to absorb than those in the tea (due to the fibre etc) and also would be hard to absorb anyway due to the tannin.
