Is Sweet potato / purple yam skin good to eat?

I think I've heard Robb Wolf mention that sweet potato/yam skin is a gut irritant, but I'm not sure if it has synergistic nutrients with the flesh?

Do you usually eat the skin when you steam or microwave sweet potatoes / purple yams ??

You realize that there are people who will get sick if they eat these skins. If you are autoimmune don't eat these skins, it won't be as bad as gluten but it won't be good. Speaking of talking heads....

AWESOME! thank you for saying that. Sometimes I just have to laugh on occasion when I read some of the militant responses to some things. Having said that..individually you just have to do what works for you and if being super militant works for you, great. (but seriously). I will say, what the heck you doing microwaving? just bake it about 20 minutes. Step away from the microwave. (on that i'm pretty militant).

What isn't a gut irritant these days? If you only listened to paleo talking heads you'd think humans evolved to have the most delicate GI tracts in all of nature and that anything less than 100% pure food (of the paleo approved types) will cause all hell to break loose in your intestines. We're not delicate little flowers. I'm not even going to bother to look this up and I'm just going to say you can eat sweet potato skin and you'll be fine.

Orthorexia runs deep among the paleos.....

If you're eating them everyday, it's probably a good idea to often eat them without the skin so that you aren't hit with the same toxin over and over again. If you're punched in the same place over and over you're going to suffer a pretty intense bruise. Chronic exposure to a particular toxin is likely to have the same sort of effect. Every now and again, no biggie. If exposure is everyday, let's start thinking about strategies to avoid that toxin.

I would conduct this experiment. Eat with a small patch of skin once every 10 times. But most of the time, avoid the skin. Why? Hormesis.

I know, everything is hormesis. But seriously, if partial exposure to antinutrients will make your immune system stronger, shoudn't you deliberately expose yourself to it to derive maximum benefit? You don't wanna overdo it, so just a little patch, not the whole thing!

It's not a joke, I seriously think this might be a fascinating experiment, if one can in fact test the benefit deriving from this.

I always eat the peel of sweet potatoes. Then about 50% of the time I peel white potatoes.
