Will US/Mexico customs freak out over my supplements?

Hi Paleohacks,

I am a kiwi who will be travelling to LA in a couple of weeks and I was wondering what the deal is with supplements. I will be taking a couple of huge bottles of HCL and Magnesium as well as my D3. These are just supplements I take without a doctor's note or anything like that. Will they make a fuss? Also I will be going down to Mexico for a week, will they also make a fuss over the huge bottles of capsules?

Usually out of the USA to Mexico if I have supplements, but I was talking about Mexican customs not TSA.

Not James is right, you don't have to declare them. You only need to declare some fresh foodstuffs, which they'll generally throw away. The stuff you need to declare are listed in the slip that you have to fill out in the plane. Declaring your pills will just give you hassle as you have to show them etc., and in the very slim chance you actually get searched they'll quickly find out they're just vitamin pills. Don't worry about it.

You're a kiwi? I imagine kiwis won't need HCL supplements, and especially D3 supplements.

I go from UK -> US and back a few times a year, and I can't recall ever seeing anything stating that I need to declare dietary supplements that are for personal use and won't be remaining in the US.

I'm confused about what there is to declare... You have to notify customs that you're bringing vitamins for personal use into the country?

Are you flying in to or out of the USA? If so, you are one lucky SOB to EVER get those TSA workers to "let things slide".

What better way to smuggle in narcotics than in vitamin pill bottles?

As a licensed customs broker and global trade professional, I finally feel qualified to answer one of these...

Just declare your items. Honestly and to the best of your knowledge. You don't become a customs officer without liking your job. The training is excellent and very well funded. USCBP rakes in huge profit. These professionals know what they are doing most of the time and have equipment and methods to find what they are looking for: drugs, contraband, WMD/bio, animal products, certain plants, and bugs. In my business I don't always agree with how CBP rates the duty on my imports, but rarely do officers at the port/border get this stuff wrong, especially if you lawfully declare your items.

They won't blink twice. Unsurprisingly, they're much more interested in searching for narcotics than vitamin pills.

pack in your suitcases the majority in new sealed bottles, take a few days with you just incase the luggage doesnt arrive, but it should not be a problem.

They are looking for contraband, or huge quantities for resale. Items for personal use do not need to be declared nor should you stress over it.

I usually bring at least a suitcase full of herbs and supplements with me into Mexico (where I now live). As long as you carry them and keep them in their original packaging, you should have no problem. If they do ask, just tell them they are for personal use or that you have a non-contagious health problem.

When I fly though, I have had problems with "bulk" items like tea or spices that aren't in sealed packaging. Usually if you are nice and act dumb about it, they'll let most things slide.

If you bring them in the original bottles you will have zero issues. If you have them in other containers there is a small chance of some questioning and delays. But they're not likely to confiscate or anything like that.

Should be okay but I'm not completely sure. I can tell you where to buy them in LA if you would like to do that.
