why take supplements

Ok, I am new here, and I was wondering what all the hype about taking supplements is all about. I was introduced to paleo to help my crohns disease, and it works well. I get lost when people talk about micro-nutrients, omega fat ratios, etc. I just have trouble when I am told to take something (usually for a lot of money) that I can't see. For example I have never seen selenium, or vitamin b12. I followed a lot of good doctor's advice, and almost died several times, while spending over half a million bucks doing it. Anyone out there getting their nutritional needs met by just good, real food? I am not trying to be cynical, I just wonder how all of you manage, thanks

Nitpicky... doesn't really take away from my point. Plenty of bacterial infections can be fatal. Take your pick...

Actually, antibiotics aren't necessary to get rid of strep throat.

+1 - agreed. To just dismiss anything "man-made" is foolishness to the same degree as simply eating whatever CW and TPTB tell you to.

I follow the supplement guidelines here http://perfecthealthdiet.com/recommended-supplements/

One of the issues is that our soil and environment are not like they were back in the Paleolithic. So our food is now deficient in some things that were plentiful then. Some supplementation and supplement type foods like egg yolks and beef liver may be needed to make up the difference.

I supplement sparingly but egg yolks, beef, chicken, milk, cheese, fish, cruciferous vegetables and potatoes do a pretty good job at maxing out my vitamins and minerals. Vitamins A, D and K2 I take just about daily. I don't supplement with much else. I don't necessarily recommend A,D or K2 for most people, I just have a back log of nutrition I feel I owe my body, and I'll stop supplementing with them when I feel the time is right.

I take plenty supplements. Science has provided us with the ability to effiently deliver certain nutrients beyond diet. It's not a bad thing.

You're not going to let Strep throat kill you, are you? No. You take the antibiotics that supplement your immune system.

Listen, EVERYTHING man has created is natural. I said it. The natural evolution of our psyche and mental capacity is INVENTION. Now, not everything we've invented is a good idea. A lot is driven by profit, some is driven by population sustainability, etc. That goes for some supplements, too, of course.

But, to just unilaterally assume that all supplements are inferior to all food sources is ignorant, dogmatic and false.
