When should you take Magnesium?

I used to take Natural Calm which suggests taking on an empty stomach and many Paleo folks say to take before bed. However, I recently switch to Magnesium Glycinate after listening to Chris Kressers Podcast on constipation. So far it has seemed to help with the occasional explosive bathroom visits Natural Calm would give me, however, it suggests taking it with food. So I take it with my last meal around 7pm and I am usually in bed by 9:30pm. When does everyone take their magnesium and would I get any benefit from taking glycinate right before bed on more of an empty stomach?

Did you ever follow the directions on the natural calm label? Titrating up slowly and steadily?

How would one's weight loss goals affect one's magnesium consumption and timing? And what is this schedule? Or do we have to go to your blog for that?

I have my bottle of ZMA next to the bed and as soon as I crawl in I pop my two capsules and zz's start not too long afterwards. This was not a supplement that I found on my own but something I was introduced to - it's kind of amazing the benefits that it brings. On pre-CF nights I take about 30-60 minutes after my last "meal" which is usually a fairly healthy snack. Post-CF nights it's maybe a couple of hours after my meal. No upset stomach or anything negative, only positives. I've been interested in Natural Calm but had heard you have to build up to it as it definitely can cause an upset tum if you aren't used to it.

If Natural Calm is giving you explosive diarrahea, have you considered that maybe you should stop taking it?

For most people magnesium calms you down, so that's why they say to take it before bed - and that's what I do. But there are people who magnesium has the opposite effect, so then they should take it when they wake up. Just do what works best for you.

I take mine about 1 hour after my last meal, which is generally an hour before I go to bed. This has been working well.

Two hours before bed for most people. If you are trying to lose a lot of weight I use a different schedule.

I take two Magnesium Glycinate pills (200mg each) right before I go to bed. I sleep like a rock and always have vivid dreams.
